Chapter 10: Shadows of the Past

While Julian sought redemption through silent distance, his brother Marcus was far less willing to let go. Vance Enterprises was navigating a turbulent merger with the Sterling Group, and Marcus saw Julian’s withdrawal from corporate leadership and his self-inflicted isolation as a sign of permanent weakness.
Late one evening in his private office on the fortieth floor, Marcus poured himself a glass of aged scotch, dialing a secure number on his desk phone.
""Private Investigator Vance speaking,"" a raspy voice answered on the other end.
""I need you to dig deeper into Clara Vance’s past,"" Marcus commanded, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. ""Specifically, the timeline surrounding her pregnancy with Lily. If there’s any legal loophole regarding paternal rights, any leverage I can use to force Julian back into a controlling position at the company, I want it on my desk by Monday.""
""That’s a gray area, Mr. Vance,"" the investigator replied cautiously. ""Julian already signed away his rights in the settlement. Reopening that would require proving coercion or mental incompetence during the signing.""
""Then find evidence of mental incompetence,"" Marcus snapped, his eyes narrowing. ""Julian was a wreck after that gala. A clever lawyer could argue he wasn't in his right mind when he handed over his empire to an ex-wife. Do your job, and name your price.""
Marcus hung up the phone with a sharp click, smiling smugly into the empty room. He believed everyone had a price, everyone had a weakness, and loyalty was merely a commodity to be bought and sold. He had underestimated Clara’s resilience, and he had completely miscalculated Julian’s capacity for genuine remorse.
Unbeknownst to Marcus, standing just outside his office door, holding a stack of financial audit reports, was Julian’s former executive assistant, Sarah. She had overheard every word of the conversation. Sarah had worked for the Vance family for over a decade; she admired Clara, adored little Lily, and despised Marcus’s manipulative ambition.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Sarah walked quietly to the elevators, slipped her phone from her pocket, and dialed a number she had memorized years ago—Julian’s direct mobile line.
