Chapter 12: Confrontation at Forty Floors

The private elevator to the fortieth floor of Vance Enterprises chimed softly, sliding open to reveal Julian Vance stepping out with an expression of cold, measured fury. The floor was dark, save for the ambient light casting long shadows across the mahogany paneling and glass partitions. Most of the executives had already left for the evening, but a sliver of light escaped beneath the door of Marcus’s corner office.

Julian walked down the hallway with steady, deliberate strides, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his presence commanding the empty space. Without knocking, he pushed the heavy oak door open.

Marcus sat behind his oversized desk, looking up with a surprised scowl that quickly morphed into a smug, patronizing smirk. ""Julian. Working late, or just coming to terms with your irrelevance?""

Julian closed the door slowly behind him, locking the heavy brass latch with a sharp click. ""Cut the act, Marcus. I know about the private investigator. I know you're planning to challenge the custody settlement.""

Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, steeple-fingering his hands. ""Ah, so the rumors travel fast. Sit down, little brother. Let’s talk business. You threw away your entire life—your status, your leverage—over a hysterical woman and a kid who isn't even—""

Before Marcus could finish the sentence, Julian crossed the room in two rapid strides, slamming both palms down onto the surface of the desk. The sheer force of his movement rattled the crystal decanter and glasses. Julian’s face was inches from his brother's, his eyes burning with an intense, controlled rage.

""If you ever, *ever* mention my daughter or my wife again, I will personally strip you of every stock option, every title, and every dime you’ve stolen from this company over the last decade,"" Julian hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. ""You think I’m weak because I walked away? You think my remorse was a permanent handicap?""

Marcus swallowed hard, the color draining slightly from his face, though he tried to maintain his arrogant veneer. ""You signed the papers, Julian. Legally, you have no standing—""

""I signed the papers voluntarily, which means I can just as easily file a counter-suit for corporate espionage and internal fraud,"" Julian interrupted smoothly, straightening up and adjusting his cuffs. ""I have Sarah compiling the financial audits right now. Try to touch Clara or Lily, Marcus, and I will destroy you before the sun sets on your grand corporate takeover.""

Marcus stared up at his brother, realizing with a cold jolt of terror that the man standing before him was no longer the insecure, easily manipulated husband of the past. He was a father protecting his own.
