Chapter 8

Back at the estate, the afternoon sun filtered through the tall arched windows of the sunroom, illuminating a colorful array of crayons, construction paper, and glitter. Emma sat cross-legged on the rug, intensely focused on drawing a picture of a large yellow house surrounded by blooming flowers and a sparkling blue swimming pool.

Robert sat nearby in a comfortable armchair, reading a leather-bound volume of history essays, though his attention frequently drifted back to his granddaughter. The lingering tension from the accident had begun to dissolve, replaced by the comforting rhythm of their restored solitude. The household staff moved through the halls with quiet efficiency, ensuring that Emma’s environment remained secure, peaceful, and predictable.

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed two, its deep, resonant gong echoing through the house. The front door chime followed shortly after.

Marcus entered the sunroom a moment later, carrying a briefcase and wearing a grave expression that immediately put Robert on alert. The attorney nodded to Emma, who offered a shy wave before returning to her artistic masterpiece.

“Can we speak in the study for a moment, Robert?” Marcus asked quietly.

Robert closed his book, marked the page with a ribbon, and stood up. He followed his lawyer down the hall, closing the heavy mahogany door behind them.

“What is it, Marcus?” Robert asked, leaning against the edge of the desk. “Did the arraignment go through?”

“It did,” Marcus said, opening his briefcase and pulling out a certified police report alongside a series of printed financial spreadsheets. “She’s being held without bail at the county detention center. Her defense attorney tried to argue entrapment based on the security footage angle, but the judge dismissed it immediately.”

“Then why the serious expression?” Robert pressed, narrowing his eyes. “There’s more.”

“There is,” Marcus admitted, sliding the financial documents across the wood. “When the sheriff’s department processed her personal belongings at the motel, they recovered her encrypted burner phone. We obtained a warrant to mirror the data. Robert... Elena wasn't acting alone, and she wasn't just after your estate for luxury.”

Robert picked up the printed chat logs, his gaze scanning the frantic text messages between Elena and an unknown contact using a encrypted handle. “Who is backing her?”

“That’s the problem,” Marcus said grimly. “The financial trail leads directly to a syndicate of private lenders connected to offshore accounts in the Caymans. She owed them close to two million dollars in high-interest loans. If she didn't secure the inheritance settlement within the month, they were going to take everything—including her life.”
