Chapter 13: The Plea Hearing

The county courthouse downtown was a monolithic structure of gray limestone and heavy oak doors, standing as a solemn monument to order and consequence. Inside the crowded courtroom, the air was cool and smelled faintly of floor wax and old paper. Robert sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his silver beard neatly trimmed, his expression completely impassive.
At the defense table sat Elena. Her hair was pulled back into a simple knot, and she wore a plain gray prison jumpsuit instead of the elegant white strap dress she had worn on the day of the poolside confrontation. Her face was pale, drawn, and lined with exhaustion. She kept her eyes fixed firmly on the polished wood of the defense table, refusing to look up toward the gallery where Robert sat like an unyielding statue of judgment.
The judge adjusted his spectacles and looked down from the elevated bench. “Mrs. Vance, you have entered a preliminary plea of guilty to the charges of reckless endangerment and aggravated assault of a minor. Do you understand the terms of this plea agreement?”
Elena’s lips trembled slightly. She swallowed hard before speaking into the microphone, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yes, Your Honor.”
“In exchange for your guilty plea,” the judge continued, “the prosecution has agreed to recommend a sentence of five years in a state correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first three years. Do you have any statement to make before sentence is passed?”
Elena hesitated. For a fraction of a second, she lifted her head and glanced back toward the gallery, her eyes locking onto Robert’s cold, unwavering gaze. She opened her mouth as if to speak—perhaps to hurl one final accusation or make a desperate plea for mercy—but the words caught in her throat. She saw the absolute finality in his eyes and realized there was nothing left to salvage.
“No, Your Honor,” Elena whispered, looking back down at the table. “I have nothing to say.”

“Then let the record show the plea is accepted,” the judge announced, striking his gavel once with a sharp, resounding crack. “Court is adjourned.”
