Chapter 4

As twilight painted the sky in bruised shades of violet and indigo, the main house grew eerily quiet. Robert sat in the leather armchair by the grand fireplace in the library, a single reading lamp casting a warm pool of light over his silver hair and the weathered skin of his hands. Emma had finally fallen asleep upstairs in her own bedroom, surrounded by her favorite stuffed animals and guarded by a trusted family nurse.

The heavy oak door creaked open, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder. The attorney looked tired, the sharp angles of his face softened by the dim lighting.

“She’s gone,” Marcus announced quietly, taking a seat opposite Robert. “The security detail escorted her off the property twenty minutes ago. She took only what fit in a single designer suitcase. No vehicle was waiting for her at the gates; she had to call a rideshare.”

Robert didn't look up from the fire. He watched a spark detach itself from a burning log and drift up the chimney into darkness. “And the digital sweep?”

“Completed,” Marcus replied, sliding the folder across the mahogany table. “We wiped her access credentials from the corporate servers, froze her personal accounts pending the fraud investigation, and secured the household metadata. If she tries to contact any of your business associates, they’ve already been instructed to alert my office.”

Robert opened the folder, reviewing the typed summary of asset protection measures. Every safeguard was in place. The fortune he had spent a lifetime building was secure. More importantly, the lineage—represented by little Emma—was shielded from predatory opportunists. Yet, a heavy ache lingered in his chest. Elena had been a part of their daily lives for three years. Her betrayal wasn't just a legal infraction; it was an emotional fracture that could not be easily mended with statutes and court orders.

“She knew about the trust fund provisions from the very beginning, didn't she?” Robert asked, his voice carrying a quiet weariness.

“She studied them obsessively,” Marcus confirmed, leaning back in his chair. “My investigation into her background revealed a pattern of strategic marriages and sudden windfalls before she ever met you, Robert. You were simply her most ambitious target.”

“And my greatest lapse in judgment,” Robert muttered, closing the folder with a soft thud. He rubbed his temples, feeling the accumulated weight of his years pressing down upon him. “Make sure the security protocols remain active around the clock. I want no chances taken with Emma’s safety.”
