Chapter 6

Deep in the downtown commercial district, miles away from the quiet sanctuary of the estate, Marcus Vance sat at his private office desk reviewing a secondary file that had just landed on his secure server. The documents originated from an independent forensic auditor who had been digging into Elena’s financial history prior to her marriage to Robert. The findings were not merely troubling; they were explosive.
Marcus adjusted his glasses and scrolled down through a list of offshore transactions, shell corporations, and suspicious life insurance policies. Elena had not stumbled into Robert’s life by chance. She had been introduced to him at a charity gala by a mutual acquaintance who had mysteriously vanished from the social circuit months later. Every step of her integration into the household had been choreographed to position her as the sole beneficiary in the event of an untimely tragedy.
The intercom on Marcus’s desk chimed softly. His assistant’s voice came through. “Mr. Vance, Detective Miller from the county sheriff’s department is on line two. He wants an update on the security footage.”
“Put him through,” Marcus said, picking up the desk phone.
“Marcus, it’s Miller,” the detective’s gravelly voice came over the speaker. “We’ve reviewed the high-definition angle from the eastern gable. There is no ambiguity here. She walked up behind the child, looked directly at the camera as if making sure it was recording, and shoved her straight into the deep end. It’s textbook aggravated assault.”
“Have you located her yet?” Marcus asked, leaning forward over the desk.
“Not personally, but our patrol units flagged her credit card at a roadside motel thirty miles outside the city limits. We’re moving in to execute the warrant now.”
“Make sure nothing is mishandled, Detective,” Marcus warned sternly. “Mr. Vance wants this processed strictly by the book. We want zero legal loopholes for her defense attorneys to exploit during the trial.”
“Understood, counsel. We’ll secure her before noon.”

Marcus hung up the phone and rubbed the bridge of his nose. The web Elena had woven to trap Robert and Emma had become the very net that captured her. Yet, looking at the complex financial trails on his screen, Marcus couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that Elena was merely a pawn in a much larger game involving debts and shadowy creditors that Robert was still entirely unaware of.
