Chapter 8

The rain continued to hammer against the glass panes all through the night, washing away the remnants of a suffocating summer heat and replacing it with an autumn chill. By Thursday morning, the St. Jude Estate resembled a war room. Papers were strewn across every available surface in the study, and Marcus Vance, a seasoned family law attorney with sharp eyes and an unyielding reputation, sat at the center of it all.
Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking over the signed affidavits and the security footage stills from the hotel lobby where Clara had chased Toby down the corridor.
“The judge on this case, Judge Harrison, has zero patience for theatrical stunts,” Marcus said, his voice deep and deliberate. “Clara’s stunt with the police yesterday actually played into our hands. Detective Miller’s report completely invalidates her claims of child abuse. That leaves her sole argument resting on her assertion that Elena is psychologically unfit to raise the child.”
Elena leaned forward in her chair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. “And how does she plan to prove that? I have a clean medical record, a stable home, and years of documented involvement in Toby’s upbringing.”
“She’s going to bring in hired experts to pick apart your emotional state on your wedding day,” Marcus explained frankly. “She’ll point to the sudden chaos, the screaming, the running, and paint you as overwhelmed and unstable. We need to flip the narrative. We need to prove that Clara’s manufactured crisis was the actual source of the instability, not a symptom of it.”
Julian leaned against the bookshelf, his arms crossed over his chest. “We have the audio recordings from the foyer intercom on the day of the incident. Clara was heard threatening to ruin Elena publicly if she didn't hand over sole guardianship of the trust.”
Marcus nodded approvingly, pulling a yellow legal pad toward him to jot down notes. “Good. That establishes motive. Financial greed masked as familial concern. It’s a classic probate and custody trap, but judges see right through it if we present it cleanly.”
Toby was in the adjoining room, occupied with a coloring book under the watchful eye of a trusted family friend, far away from the heavy legal jargon. But Elena could still hear the faint scratching of crayons, a poignant reminder of what they were fighting to protect.

“What do we need to do between now and tomorrow morning?” Elena asked, her voice steady and resolute.
“Rest, stay calm, and let me do the talking,” Marcus said, offering a reassuring smile. “Clara wants you to lose your temper on the stand. She wants you to look defensive, hysterical, or erratic. If you give her that, she wins. If you stay completely composed, she will unravel under cross-examination. Her entire case is built on sand.”
