Chapter 2

The cavernous ballroom emptied in a matter of minutes as the terrified wedding guests murmured excuses and scurried toward the valet parking, desperate to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal. Only the cold wind whistling through the tall arched windows remained to fill the heavy silence. Julian had not moved an inch from his protective stance, his black tuxedo jacket buttoned tightly, his gaze fixed on Clara. Clara stood frozen near the double doors, her maroon dress catching the amber glow of the wall sconces, her chest heaving as she struggled to regulate her breathing.

Elena slowly rose to her feet, keeping Toby half-hidden behind the voluminous folds of her white wedding gown. She looked down at the boy, gently wiping a smudge of dirt from his temple with the back of her trembling hand. The red stain on his white shirt was already drying, stiffening the fabric against his ribs. It was not blood, despite its terrifying appearance; it was cherry fruit punch mixed with red food dye from the kitchen pantry, an accidental mess from a baking project gone wrong that Clara had hysterically misinterpreted—or deliberately weaponized—to accuse Elena of child endangerment.

“You’ve gone too far this time, Clara,” Elena said, her voice shaking slightly but carrying a ring of undeniable steel. “Dragging a frightened child through a public hotel lobby just to make a scene? What kind of monster does that?”

Clara let out a sharp, incredulous laugh that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. “A monster? I’m the only one protecting him from your delusions, Elena! Look at what you’ve done to this family. You trap a man into marriage, you play house, and now you’re dragging Toby down into your unstable world.”

Julian took a slow, deliberate step forward, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the floor. His eyes were cold, stripped of any warmth. “Enough, Clara. The game is over. We have the documents, and the courts will see your actions tonight for what they truly are: harassment and abduction.”

Clara sneered, her fingers curling into tight fists at her sides. She cast a venomous look at Julian before turning on her heel with a dramatic swirl of her maroon fabric. The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind her with a concussive thud, leaving the three of them alone in the vast, ruined hall. Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, her knees finally giving out as she sank into a velvet armchair near the sweetheart table. Toby curled up beside her chair, burying his face in the hem of her wedding dress, finally falling quiet as exhaustion claimed him. Julian walked over, placing a steady, reassuring hand on Elena’s bare shoulder.
