Chapter 13

The drive back to the St. Jude Estate was quiet, stripped of the oppressive anxiety that had weighed upon them for days. The rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, washed blue sky and sunlight filtering through the dense canopy of ancient oaks lining the long gravel driveway.
When the car pulled up to the grand front entrance, Toby was waiting on the wide stone porch, sitting on a wooden bench with his favorite picture book open in his lap. He looked up as the car doors opened, his eyes darting quickly to Elena and Julian as they stepped out.
Elena hurried up the steps, her heels clicking lightly against the stone, and dropped to her knees in front of the boy. She scooped him up into a fierce, joyful embrace, burying her face in his shoulder as a few stray tears of pure relief escaped her eyes.
“It’s over, sweetie,” Elena whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “We won. We get to stay right here, together, and nobody is ever going to take you away.”
Toby wrapped his small arms tightly around her neck, letting out a small, happy sigh. “We don't have to run anymore?”
“Never again,” Julian said, walking up behind them and placing a warm, steady hand on both of their shoulders. He smiled down at the boy, his stern authority replaced entirely by a profound, protective warmth. “You’re home, champ. And nobody is ever getting past the front door again.”
That evening, the St. Jude Estate felt entirely different. The oppressive shadows that had lingered since the disastrous wedding reception seemed to have been swept away by the autumn wind. In the large country kitchen, the lingering scent of sugar and vanilla replaced the sterile coldness of the courtroom. Toby sat at the wooden island, happily decorating a batch of fresh cookies with colorful icing, completely absorbed in the simple joy of being a child again.
Elena stood by the window, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet. Julian walked up beside her, handing her a fresh cup of coffee, and wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side.

“We actually did it,” Elena murmured, resting her head against his shoulder.
“We did,” Julian agreed softly, kissing the top of her dark hair. “The storm has finally passed, Elena. From here on out, it’s just us.”
