Chapter 7

By late afternoon, the storm clouds that had been gathering over the horizon finally broke, sending heavy sheets of rain lashing against the tall leaded windows of the St. Jude Estate. Inside, the atmosphere was nearly as turbulent. Julian sat at the mahogany desk in the study, surrounded by stacks of financial records, bank statements, and legal briefs, working the phone with a network of accountants and friendly associates trying to untangle the emergency asset freeze Clara had slapped on their accounts.
Elena sat on the floor of the adjoining library with Toby, building an intricate fortress out of wooden blocks to keep the boy distracted and calm. Despite her outward composure, her mind was racing with dark scenarios. Clara’s tactical ruthlessness knew no bounds; she was willing to burn down the entire family legacy just to secure sole control of the trust and exact petty revenge on Elena for marrying Julian.
“Mom?” Toby asked quietly, placing a small red block atop the highest tower of the fortress. “Are we going to have to leave this house?”
Elena paused, her hands hovering over the wooden blocks. She looked down into the boy’s wide, innocent eyes, hating the fact that an eight-year-old had to even contemplate such questions. She forced a warm, steady smile to her face. “No, sweetie. We aren't going anywhere. This is our home. Julian and I are going to make sure of that.”
“Aunt Clara looked really angry yesterday,” Toby murmured, his small fingers fidgeting with the hem of his grey shirt. “She said bad things about you when we were in the car.”
Elena’s heart twisted, but she kept her voice even. “Aunt Clara was upset, Toby. Sometimes adults get confused and make bad choices when they’re angry. But it has nothing to do with you. You are loved, and you are safe here with us.”
Down the hall, the heavy oak study door opened with a quiet click. Julian walked into the library, looking exhausted, his tie completely discarded and his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He offered a tired smile as he walked over and sat down cross-legged on the rug beside them, gently placing a block on the side of Toby’s tower to stabilize it.
“How are the finances looking?” Elena asked softly, keeping her voice low so Toby wouldn't catch the heavy worry in her tone.
Julian shook his head slightly, his dark eyes reflecting the flickering light of the fireplace. “It’s messy. The judge granted the temporary freeze on the primary accounts pending the hearing on Friday, which means our liquid cash is locked up for the next forty-eight hours. However, I managed to liquidate a private portfolio. We have enough to cover our legal fees for the trial, but it’s going to be tight.”

“She’s trying to starve us out legally,” Elena said, her jaw tightening.
“She is,” Julian agreed grimly. “Which means we can't afford to play defense anymore. We have to bring the fight directly to her doorstep on Friday.”
