Chapter 5

The rustling of paper was the only sound in the vast boardroom as the executives frantically absorbed the financial evidence. Page after page detailed unauthorized asset transfers, ghost payrolls, and deliberate attempts to devalue Vanguard’s core subsidiaries. Arthur Vance stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched so tightly that muscles twitched along his cheek. He knew that denial was useless; the paper trail was airtight, backed by banking records that bypassed corporate firewalls entirely.
"This audit was compiled illegally," Vance rasped, his voice dropping an octave as desperation set in. "You had no authority to access internal accounts without a formal board resolution. We can challenge the admissibility of these documents in federal court. We can tie this up in litigation for years!"
Maya leaned back in her chair, resting her hands lightly on the armrests. She observed Vance with a detached, clinical curiosity. "You are welcome to try, Arthur," she replied evenly. "However, the federal judges who signed these warrants didn't act on my personal authority. They acted on the recommendation of the Department of Justice's white-collar crime division. The moment you attempted to push through the emergency liquidation of the logistics division this morning, you triggered a pre-arranged federal wiretap warrant. Every illegal transaction you authorized over the past three years is already cataloged in federal custody."
Victoria covered her face with her hands, a low, shuddering breath escaping her lips. The veneer of untouchable elitism that the Chen family had cultivated for decades was evaporating in real time. She had spent the last three years treating Maya as a helpless casualty of corporate warfare, completely blind to the fact that Maya had spent those exact same three years systematically dismantling their financial network from the inside out, using their own arrogance as a catalyst.
One of the senior board members, a frail man named Henderson who had served under Maya’s father, slowly pushed his glasses up his nose. He looked across the table, his eyes filled with a mixture of profound regret and quiet respect. "Director Lin," Henderson began, his voice trembling slightly. "Many of us... we stayed silent because we were threatened. Vance and the Chen faction made it clear that dissent meant professional ruin. Is there still a path forward for this institution, or have we crossed the point of no return?"

"Silence in the face of corruption is complicity, Henderson," Maya answered, her tone remaining measured and fair. "However, I did not return to Vanguard to orchestrate a massacre. I returned to restore structural integrity. Those who actively participated in the embezzlement will face the full weight of the law. Those who simply lacked the courage to speak up will have one chance to prove their loyalty by assisting in the immediate restructuring of our core divisions."
Arthur Vance sneered bitterly. "And who appointed you savior? You think walking in here with a fancy key fob gives you divine right? The board still holds the majority vote on executive appointments. Without a formal ratification vote, you're just another squatter."
