Chapter 1

The morning sun cast a sharp, geometric glare across the polished granite courtyard of Vanguard Tower. Maya Lin adjusted her grip on the bamboo broom, feeling the rough texture of the dried twigs against her palms. She wore a simple pink sleeveless top and matching pink trousers, a deliberate choice meant to blend into the background of corporate excess. Around her, the concrete was immaculate, yet she traced the same invisible patterns with slow, measured sweeps. Breathing evenly, she kept her gaze lowered, watching the dust motes settle in the cool morning air. She was not merely a custodian; she was an observer who understood that power usually announced itself loudest right before it fractured.
Footsteps clicked against the stone, sharp and rhythmic. Victoria Chen approached, her strides confident and predatory. Victoria wore a sleek black top under an ivory-white blazer draped casually over her shoulders, her lips painted a stark, defiant crimson. She stopped a few feet from Maya, her dark eyes glittering with amused condescension. Victoria tilted her head, letting out a soft, breathy laugh that carried effortlessly across the open plaza. Several junior executives lingered near the glass revolving doors, whispering behind cupped hands, watching the ritual humiliation unfold with quiet morbid curiosity.
"Still playing at humility, Maya?" Victoria asked, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness. "The board meeting is happening on the sixty-floor penthouse in twenty minutes. You really thought wearing discount activewear would make everyone forget who actually ruined the Chen family legacy? Some people are born to build empires, and others are simply meant to sweep up the debris after we burn them down."

Maya did not flinch. She paused her sweeping, letting the silence stretch for a beat. Her eye movements were deliberate, devoid of anger or defensiveness. She simply met Victoria’s gaze with a calm, steady neutrality that unsettled the other woman more than any outburst could have. Victoria’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of unease crossing her polished features before she quickly masked it behind another haughty smile. The spectators leaned in closer, anticipating a crack in Maya’s composure, but none came.
Before Victoria could deliver her next prepared insult, a low, guttural rumble vibrated through the asphalt. A convoy of three matte-black luxury sedans turned the corner simultaneously, gliding to a synchronized halt along the curb directly in front of the building. The sleek vehicles cut their engines in unison, doors opening with a muffled thud. Two imposing men in tailored black business suits and dark silk ties stepped out. Their movements were synchronized, efficient, and entirely indifferent to the murmurs of the morning crowd. They strode purposefully past the onlookers, their eyes locked entirely on the woman holding the bamboo broom.
