Chapter 3

The executive elevator rose in absolute silence, cutting through the fifty floors of Vanguard Tower with hydraulic smoothness. Maya stood in the center of the cabin, adjusting the collar of her pink top. She had decided against changing into formal business attire; the psychological impact of addressing the board in the same clothes she had used to sweep the entrance was an intentional tactical choice. Beside her, the lead security officer checked a tablet displaying real-time biometric feeds and internal security logs from the boardroom above.

"They are currently attempting to push through the emergency liquidation clause," the officer reported quietly, his eyes fixed on the screen. "Director Vance has mobilized four allied board members to force an immediate vote on selling off the Asian-Pacific logistics division to Vanguard's primary competitor. If that passes, our controlling stake drops below forty percent before midday."

Maya’s expression remained serene. "Let them introduce the motion," she said, her voice calm and measured. "A cornered animal always rushes toward the open trap. They think my father’s absence left a vacuum. They forgot that a vacuum eventually pulls everything back toward the center."

The elevator chimed softly, and the heavy mahogany doors slid open to reveal the cavernous, glass-walled boardroom. The room was already suffocating with tension. Fifteen executives sat around an elongated quartz conference table, murmuring anxiously among themselves. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, a silver-haired man with sharp, predatory features, currently tapping a gold fountain pen against the polished surface. Victoria Chen sat to his right, her composure somewhat recovered, though her fingers trembled slightly as she adjusted her ivory blazer.

When Maya walked into the room, a collective hush fell over the assembly. Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their high-backed leather chairs, avoiding eye contact. Arthur Vance frowned deeply, slamming his pen down on the table with an irritating crack. He stood up, towering over the table, attempting to assert immediate dominance through sheer physical presence and volume.

"What is the meaning of this interruption?" Vance barked, his voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling windows. "This is a closed executive session. Cleaning staff are strictly prohibited from entering this floor during morning deliberations. Security, remove her immediately!"

None of the security guards stationed by the doors moved an inch. Instead, they stood at attention, watching Maya with unyielding loyalty. Maya walked slowly toward the empty chair at the opposite end of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the Chairman of the Board. She pulled out the chair with a smooth, deliberate motion, letting the legs scrape quietly against the floor before sitting down. She placed the heavy titanium key fob right in the center of the quartz table. The metal gleamed coldly under the designer overhead lights, casting an unmistakable shadow over Arthur Vance’s ledger.
