Chapter 4

Dr. Harrison paced the floor of his office, his heavy breathing audible in the quiet room. He walked over to the mahogany desk, flicking on a small desk lamp that cast a harsh yellow glow over the papers. Elena and Lily stood pressed against the tiled wall of the adjoining restroom, holding their breath, their hearts pounding in a synchronized rhythm of pure panic.
"I know someone was in here," Harrison muttered to himself, his voice cold and clipped.
He flipped through the remaining folders on his desk, his irritation growing when he noticed the missing Disposals file. Harrison cursed under his breath, reaching for a sleek landline phone on his desk. He punched in a three-digit extension with sharp, aggressive jabs.
"Security," Harrison barked into the receiver. "Sweep the third floor administrative wing. We have an unauthorized presence. Vance and the girl are still on the premises. Find them before Sterling’s men arrive, or we all answer for the missing paperwork."
He slammed the phone down and strode out of the office, slamming the heavy door behind him. The lock turned with a sharp metallic snap.
Elena exhaled a long, shaky breath, her knees nearly buckling beneath her. Lily caught her by the waist, using her small frame to help steady her mother. The girl’s face was pale, but her eyes burned with a fierce, quiet resolve that defied her nine years.
"We need to get out of the hospital, Mom," Lily whispered, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.
"You're right, baby. The service stairs are just past the records archive at the end of this hallway," Elena replied, opening the restroom door and stepping back into the darkened office.
They checked the hallway through the frosted glass. It was empty, but the distant chatter of security guards echoed from the stairwell junction. They needed a distraction, or a secondary route. Elena remembered the laundry chutes. They serviced every floor, dropping directly into the basement sorting facility where delivery trucks loaded soiled linens before dawn. It was a filthy, dangerous gamble, but it bypassed the guarded stairwells entirely.
Moving quickly and silently, they retraced their steps out of Room 304 and navigated the labyrinthine administrative corridors until they found the heavy steel door marked Laundry Service Chute - Authorized Personnel Only.
Elena pulled the latch. The metal door creaked open, revealing a steep, slick stainless-steel drop that vanished into the subterranean depths of the building. A warm, humid smell of bleach and damp cotton billowed up from below.

"We're going down there?" Lily asked, staring into the dark metal tube with undisguised apprehension.
"It's our only way out without running straight into their arms," Elena said softly, smoothing Lily's dark ponytail. "Hold onto me tight. We do this together."
