Chapter 2

The wheels of the bassinet faded down the linoleum hallway, leaving behind an oppressive stillness. Elena didn't move from her cramped hiding place beneath the bed. Her muscles ached, but the adrenaline pulsing through her veins drowned out the physical pain of childbirth. Lily’s breathing was shallow and rapid, a metronome of fear.
"Mom, are they gone?" Lily whispered, her voice barely audible, vibrating against Elena’s collarbone.
"Not yet, sweetie. Stay close to me," Elena murmured back, her eyes fixed on the empty space where the blue-scrubbed nurse had stood.
They waited five agonizing minutes before sliding out from under the bed. The room was illuminated only by the pale amber glow of the streetlights filtering through the wired glass of the window. Elena’s bare feet touched the cold floor, sending a shiver through her frail body. She looked at the abandoned bassinet frame, now empty, its striped blanket crumpled like a discarded wrapper. The realization struck her with brutal clarity: this hospital was part of the network that had stolen her newborn, trading children like commodities to powerful men who demanded heirs at any cost.
Elena knew the man she had fled from—Victor—would stop at nothing to secure his lineage. But Lily was the wrench in his machine. Victor had never wanted Lily, believing rumors of infidelity that he manufactured himself to justify his control. That was what Elena meant when she whispered that the older daughter wasn't his. Lily was born from a love Elena had buried years ago, a safe harbor before Victor trapped her in his gilded cage. Victor wanted a clean slate, a pure bloodline, and he was using the corrupt staff of Saint Jude to replace Elena's true baby with a surrogate infant tied to his syndicate.
"We need to find my coat," Elena whispered, scanning the sterile room.

A utilitarian metal closet stood in the corner. Inside hung Lily’s grey hoodie, damp from the rain outside, and Elena’s trench coat. Elena grabbed them, wrapping Lily in the heavy fabric to ward off the chill. They needed to escape before the nurse returned with security. The front doors were suicide; Victor’s men surely monitored the lobby. Their only chance was the service stairwell at the end of the maternity ward, past the administrative offices where patient files were kept.
Lily held her injured arm close to her chest, wincing as she moved. The bruise was a reminder of the night they fled his estate, the night Victor discovered Elena’s plan to run. But resilience pulsed beneath Lily’s terror. She was fiercely protective of her mother, mirroring the fierce loyalty Elena had always shown her. Together, hand in hand, they crept toward the heavy metal door of the hospital room, pushing it open into the shadowy hallway.
