Chapter 13

The federal courthouse loomed against the morning sky like a fortress of gray stone and uncompromising justice. Armed federal marshals stood stationed at every entrance, their tactical vests and authoritative presence creating a secure perimeter around the grand steps.

Marcus’s rusted Ford sedan pulled up directly behind a convoy of black SUVs bearing federal insignia. Agent Vance, a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored charcoal suit with silver-streaked hair, stepped out to meet them as they exited the car.

"Elena Vance?" Agent Vance asked, extending a firm, professional hand.

"Yes," Elena answered, shaking the prosecutor's hand firmly while keeping one hand protectively on Lily’s shoulder.

"Thank you for having the courage to come forward with those files," Agent Vance said, her tone both sympathetic and resolute. "Your daughter is safe. Federal marshals secured the Saint Jude nursery twenty minutes ago. The surrogate infant was successfully recovered, and the administrative staff, including Dr. Harrison, are currently in custody."

Tears of profound relief spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, and for the first time in days, a genuine smile touched her pale face. She knelt down, pulling Lily into a tight embrace.

"We did it, Lily. Your sister is coming home," Elena whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

Lily buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, a quiet sigh of relief escaping the young girl’s lips as the invisible weight of fear finally lifted from her shoulders.

"Inside the courthouse, our legal team will handle the custody affidavits and finalize the permanent protection orders," Agent Vance continued, gesturing toward the heavy oak doors. "Victor Sterling’s corporate headquarters was raided simultaneously with the hospital. His financial assets have been frozen, and an arrest warrant has been issued for his immediate apprehension on charges of racketeering, child trafficking, and corporate fraud."

As they walked up the grand stone steps, escorted by a phalanx of federal marshals, Elena caught sight of a sleek black limousine pulling up to the police blockade across the street. Through the tinted window, a familiar, furious face glared out at them—Victor Sterling, trapped in the web of his own making, watching his empire disintegrate before his eyes.

Victor made a move to open the car door, but two local officers flanked the vehicle instantly, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms. Victor stared directly at Elena, his expression a mask of defeated rage. Elena met his gaze without flinching, standing tall with Lily beside her, a mother who had walked through the fires of hell to reclaim her family.
