Chapter 1

Silence in Saint Jude Memorial Hospital was rarely peaceful. Tonight, it felt heavy, suffocating, and loaded with dread. Elena sat on the edge of the stiff mattress, her hospital gown sticking to her clammy skin. Her wet hair clung to the sides of her pale face, framing eyes wide with raw, unadulterated terror. Beside her sat nine-year-old Lily, clutching her grey hoodie tightly around her small frame. A dark, ugly bruise stained the girl’s forearm—a silent witness to the violence that had brought them to this sterile room. They stared rigidly toward the foot of the bed, frozen in absolute horror.
"She's..." Elena whispered, her voice a fragile breath that fractured in the cold air.
At the foot of the bed, the clear plastic bassinet held the newborn baby wrapped snugly in a striped blanket. But the baby wasn't theirs. Or rather, the baby that belonged to Elena had been spirited away hours ago, replaced by an infant that represented a sinister bargain Elena had never agreed to make. The footsteps in the hallway grew louder, echoing with a methodical rhythm that sent shivers down Elena’s spine. She grabbed Lily’s hand, the child’s skin ice-cold against her palm. Without a word, the instinct of survival took over. They slipped off the high mattress and scrambled underneath the bed, pressing their backs against the cold linoleum floor.
A pair of pristine white shoes and blue scrub pants strode past the bedside. The nurse’s footsteps halted near the bassinet. From their low vantage point, Elena and Lily watched through the metal frame of the bed. The gloved hand of the medical professional reached out, adjusting the striped blanket with chilling detachment. Elena clamped her hand over her own mouth to stifle a sob, while Lily buried her face in her mother’s damp shoulder, trembling violently.
The nurse turned the bassinet around, wheeling it smoothly past the foot of the bed and out toward the dimly lit corridor. Elena clutched Lily closer, tears carving hot tracks down her pale cheeks. The psychological weight of the room was crushing.

"The daughter... she's not his anyway," Elena muttered quietly into the dark space beneath the bed, the hidden truth tasting like ash on her tongue.
Lily gazed up, her dark eyes swimming with unspeakable trauma. Her lower lip trembled before she pressed her face back into Elena's shoulder. The threat was real, and the conspiracy ran deeper than the hospital walls.
