Chapter 5: The Confrontation on the Landing

Julian descended the grand staircase with a renewed sense of purpose. The overwhelming grief and shock from earlier had hardened into a quiet, unyielding resolve. In his arms, little Paulana had finally fallen asleep, her tiny head resting heavily against his broad shoulder, one small hand clutching the lapel of his black suit jacket. Her breathing was soft and rhythmic, a stark contrast to the turbulent storm brewing downstairs.
Standing on the first-floor landing, blocking his path, was Elena. Her arms were crossed tightly over the bodice of her white evening dress, her face a mask of calculated coldness.
“Put her down, Julian,” Elena said, her voice dangerously low. “We need to talk about this like adults, without the props.”
Julian stopped three steps up, keeping his body positioned protectively around the sleeping child. “Move, Elena.”
“I won’t move until you use your brain instead of your bleeding heart,” Elena retorted, taking a step upward. “Do you have any idea what will happen tomorrow morning when the board of directors finds out you have an illegitimate toddler living in the mansion? Your stock will plummet. The media will tear you apart. Everything your father built, everything we sacrificed for—gone in a single headline.”
“I don’t care about the stock,” Julian replied coldly, his voice echoing in the vast foyer. “I care about my daughter. A daughter you knew about and deliberately kept from me.”
Elena’s eyes flashed with anger, but beneath the fury, a flicker of genuine panic crossed her features. “I protected you! That woman—the mother—she was trouble. She abandoned her, Julian! She left her on our doorstep with a note and vanished. I simply managed the situation so it wouldn’t destroy your career.”
“You lied,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave. “You manipulated a helpless child’s existence for the sake of your own social standing. That ends tonight. Tomorrow, I am calling a press conference. I am legally recognizing Paulana as my legitimate heir, and an investigation into how her mother disappeared will begin immediately.”
The color drained entirely from Elena’s face. The threat of an investigation clearly hit a nerve far deeper than mere corporate scandal. For a split second, her composure cracked, revealing a desperate, cornered animal.

“You wouldn’t dare,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling.
“Watch me,” Julian said. He stepped past her on the marble landing, his broad shoulders brushing against hers, carrying his daughter toward a safe haven, leaving Elena standing alone in the cold shadows of the grand foyer.
