Chapter 13: The Final Choice

The lightning flashed violently through the gable window, casting stark, jagged shadows across the stairwell landing. Julian stood frozen ten feet away, his eyes locked on Elena’s trembling hands as she held little Paulana over the precipice of the open stairwell. The toddler was sobbing inconsolably, calling out in a tiny, heartbroken voice, “Daddy... help me...”

The sound of his daughter’s voice shattered the last remnants of Julian’s restraint. He didn’t look at Elena; he looked directly into Paulana’s wide, terrified hazel eyes, channeling every ounce of calm authority he possessed.

“Paulana,” Julian said softly, his voice steady and warm, cutting through the howling wind outside. “Look at me, sweetheart. Just keep your eyes on Daddy. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

The little girl sniffled, her small head turning slightly toward him, her tiny fingers loosening their grip on Elena’s silk blouse just a fraction.
