Chapter 4: Unraveling the Web

Downstairs, the atmosphere in the study remained thick with tension. Elena paced across the antique Persian rug, her white evening dress swirling around her ankles like seafoam in a tempest. She lifted her gold-plated smartphone with a trembling hand, punching in a series of digits with furious speed. The call connected after three long rings.

“He knows,” Elena hissed into the receiver, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. “The fool figured it out the moment the girl started crying in the foyer. He’s up in the east wing with her right now.”

On the other end of the line, a low, gravelly voice chuckled—a sound devoid of any humor. “Relax, Elena. It was bound to happen eventually. A child cannot be hidden forever, especially not one carrying Julian Vance’s stubborn blood.”

“Relax?” Elena slammed her palm against the edge of the mahogany desk, making the crystal decanters rattle. “You don’t understand! If Julian investigates the mother’s disappearance, if he digs into the financial records from five years ago, he’ll trace everything right back to us. We’ll lose the entire estate. I’ll lose everything!”

“Then make sure he doesn’t dig,” the voice replied coldly. “You have more leverage than you think. Julian is a man bound by duty and reputation. Remind him of the board of directors. Remind him of what happens to the Vance Corporation if a scandal of this magnitude hits the financial press. He’ll fall in line, just like he always has.”

The line went dead with a sharp click. Elena lowered the phone, her chest heaving as she stared at her own reflection in the darkened window pane. She had spent years climbing into high society, shedding her humble origins like old skin, and she was not about to let a three-year-old toddler and a burst of paternal sentimentality destroy her empire.

Opening the heavy oak door of the study, she stepped back out into the grand foyer. The house was too quiet. Upstairs, Julian was bonding with a child he never knew he had, entirely unaware of the storm gathering around them. Elena adjusted the strap of her white dress, her jaw set with grim determination. She needed to act before Julian made a permanent decision that would cost them both everything.

As she started toward the grand staircase, she heard footsteps approaching from above. Julian was coming down, and the look in his eyes was going to change everything.
