Chapter 11: The Closing Net

The digital clock on the dashboard of Julian’s rented car read 11:42 PM as he sped back toward the estate through the winding coastal highway. The rain was drumming a frantic rhythm against the windshield, blurring the headlights of passing trucks into streaks of silver and red. Inside his coat pocket, the manila folder from the Pacifica archive felt like a block of ice against his chest. He had the proof. The financial trail, the forged documents, the malicious interference—it was all there, pointing directly to Elena.

His phone buzzed violently on the passenger seat. The screen flashed a private caller ID. Julian hit the speaker button with his thumb, keeping his eyes on the slick road ahead.

“Julian,” Elena’s voice came through the car speakers, perfectly calm, yet laced with a chilling undertone. “I hope you’re enjoying your little trip down memory lane in Pacifica. It’s a very picturesque town, isn’t it? Such a shame about the treacherous weather down there.”

Julian gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles ached. “You didn’t just pay her off, Elena. You had her silenced. You staged an accident.”

A low, cold laugh echoed from the speakers. “Please, Julian. Do you really think I’m capable of murder? I am a businesswoman, not a monster. Maya was stubborn. She threatened to come to the city and expose everything, to ruin the empire we built. She took her own boat out into the storm. I merely... facilitated her financial transition so her disappearance wouldn’t raise too many awkward questions with the local authorities.”

“You’re a psychopath,” Julian said through clenched teeth.

“I am your wife,” Elena corrected sharply. “And more importantly, I am currently sitting in the upstairs nursery with little Paulana, enjoying a very quiet cup of tea with Clara. The nanny was just telling me how much she adores the little girl. It would be such a tragedy if something unfortunate were to happen to either of them before you managed to drive back through this storm.”

Julian’s blood ran completely cold. The threat was explicit. He slammed his foot down on the accelerator, the engine roaring in protest as the car surged forward into the blinding rain.

“If you touch a single hair on their heads, Elena, I swear to God I will destroy every last piece of your life, legal or illegal, and leave you with nothing.”

“You have forty minutes to get back here, Julian,” Elena replied softly, the line clicking dead with a sharp, chilling tone.

The highway stretched out before him into the dark, rainy abyss. Julian pushed the vehicle to its absolute limit, his mind racing with terrifying scenarios. He had underestimated the depth of Elena’s depravity, and now his daughter’s life was hanging in the balance.
