Chapter 8: The Weight of Scrutiny

By Tuesday morning, the story had leaked. What was supposed to be the society wedding of the season had mutated into a tabloid feeding frenzy. Helicopters hovered intermittently above the perimeter of David and Elena’s estate, their distant rotor blades chopping through the morning air like a persistent heartbeat.

Clara sat at the oak dining table, scrolling through her phone. Headlines flashed across various news aggregators: *BRIDAL BLOWOUT: Society Wedding Derails in Violence;* *Groom Arrested Minutes Before Vows;* The Dark Secret Behind the White Dress. Comment sections were a toxic wasteland of speculation, victim-blaming, and morbid curiosity.

Elena set a plate of toast and fruit in front of her daughter, though Clara hadn't touched food in nearly forty-eight hours.

"Put the phone down, sweetheart," Elena urged gently, pulling out the chair opposite her. "Reading that poison isn't going to help you heal."

"I have to know what people are saying, Mom," Clara murmured without looking up from the screen. "Some of them are saying I provoked him. They're digging up my old social media posts, trying to find a reason why he snapped."

"People who don't know you will always invent reasons to justify cruelty," David said, walking into the room with a thick stack of legal documents tucked under his arm. He dropped the papers onto the table with a heavy thud. "More importantly, the district attorney is moving forward with an expedited indictment. Julian's defense attorney is trying a psychiatric angle—claiming he suffered a sudden, temporary dissociative fugue state."

Clara finally looked up, her eyes flashing with cold disbelief. "A dissociative fugue? He cornered me, bruised my shoulder, and told me he wanted me to be afraid. There was nothing dissociative about it. He was completely lucid. He enjoyed every second of it."

"We know that," David said firmly, pulling out a chair. "And the hotel security footage supports every word you've said. But courtrooms are theatrical places, Clara. Defense attorneys specialize in turning perpetrators into victims of circumstance. They're going to paint you as cold, distant, and unyielding, driving a sensitive man to his breaking point."

Clara gripped the edge of the table until her knuckles turned white. "Let them try. I'm not hiding anymore."

"Good," Elena said, reaching across the table to squeeze Clara’s hand. "Because the police detective handling the case just called. They found something else in Julian’s apartment during the execution of the search warrant. Something he kept hidden from all of us."
