Chapter 4: Threshold of Reality

The elevator doors slid open with a soft, mechanical chime, offering an escape from the suffocating atmosphere of the third-floor hallway. David caught the door with his hand, his suit jacket straining across his broad shoulders as he kept the entrance clear for his wife and daughter.

Clara stepped inside, her white wedding dress sweeping across the metallic floor, picking up a stray piece of confetti that had somehow survived the morning’s chaos. She leaned heavily against the mirrored wall of the car, staring at her own reflection. The bride staring back at her looked like a ghost—pale, hollow-eyed, and irrevocably altered.

Elena pressed herself against Clara’s side, wrapping a protective arm around her waist. Neither of them spoke as the car descended. The silence between them was not empty; it was heavy with unasked questions and the terrifying task of untangling a life that had just been upended in a matter of seconds.

Downstairs, the grand lobby of the hotel was still buzzing with oblivious guests. The string quartet was playing a gentle Vivaldi piece, and servers in crisp black vests were carrying trays of champagne flutes, completely unaware that the wedding of the season had disintegrated into ash upstairs.

David strode out of the elevator first, his eyes fixed straight ahead, radiating a fierce, protective aura that warned anyone from approaching. Elena guided Clara through a side exit, bypassing the sea of smiling faces and camera-toting relatives who were waiting for the grand entrance of the newlywed couple.

Once they reached the damp, overcast air of the valet parking area, the chill of the morning finally cut through Clara’s silk dress. She shivered, pulling her arms around her chest again, unconsciously protecting the bruised shoulder.

"Get in the back of the town car, sweetheart," David instructed gently, holding the door open. His voice, usually so commanding, held a fragile, tender note when he spoke to his daughter.

Clara slid across the leather seat, pulling her voluminous skirt in after her. As Elena climbed in beside her and pulled the door shut, cutting off the sounds of the hotel, Clara finally let out a long, shuddering breath. The panic was morphing into something colder, sharper.

"He planned it," Clara said quietly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engine.

Elena turned to her sharply. "What did you say?"

"Before the ceremony. In the alcove," Clara whispered, staring straight ahead through the tinted window. "He told me he needed to see me surrender. Those were his exact words."
