Chapter 13: The Plea Deal

The prosecution’s case solidified with terrifying efficiency. Armed with the decade-long journals recovered from Julian’s hidden compartment, the digital surveillance files tracking Clara’s daily routines, and the hotel security footage capturing his exact words in the alcove, the district attorney offered the defense a non-negotiable choice: plead guilty to felony stalking and domestic battery, or face a maximum trial with aggravated charges that would guarantee a decade behind bars.
Julian’s defense attorney didn't even bother negotiating.
On a bright Tuesday morning, exactly one month after the aborted wedding, Clara, David, and Elena sat in the same courtroom. This time, the atmosphere was solemn, devoid of the chaotic media frenzy that had characterized the arraignment.
Julian stood before the judge in his orange jumpsuit, his shoulders slumped, his eyes cast downward toward the polished wooden floorboards. The charming, calculated predator who had orchestrated a two-year illusion was entirely gone, replaced by a broken man facing the unavoidable consequences of his own arrogance.
"Mr. Vance," the judge said, his voice echoing through the quiet courtroom. "You have entered a plea of guilty to felony domestic battery and stalking under false pretense. Do you understand the terms of this agreement?"
Julian swallowed hard, his voice barely audible as he replied, "I do, Your Honor."
"Do you have any statement to make before the court passes sentence?"
Julian hesitated. A long, agonizing silence filled the courtroom. He slowly raised his head, his eyes scanning the room until they found Clara sitting upright in the front row. For a fleeting second, his lips parted as if he wanted to offer one final excuse, one final justification for his desperate need to control her.
Instead, the reality of his complete defeat seemed to wash over him. He looked down at his shackled hands, wringing them together in a familiar gesture of tearful regret.
"I... I only wanted her to be afraid," Julian whispered into the microphone, his voice cracking with self-pity. "I didn't think... I didn't think she would actually leave."

The judge’s expression hardened. "Fear is not a tool of affection, Mr. Vance. It is the weapon of a coward."
With a sharp strike of his gavel, the judge delivered the sentence: five years in a maximum-security state correctional facility with no possibility of parole for the first three.
