Chapter 2: Unraveling the Veil

Elena’s hands trembled as she pulled the torn fabric of the wedding dress slightly over Clara’s bruised shoulder. The gold sequins of her evening gown scraped softly against Clara’s cheek as she held her tight. The air in the hallway felt thin, starved of oxygen.

Clara hugged her own knees to her chest, her body locked in a violent shiver. The blurred figure of Julian sat hunched in the background, a slumped silhouette against the white wall.

"Mom, I can't stay married to him," Clara whispered, the words tumbling out in a ragged gasp. Her eyes darted toward Julian with pure dread, as if she were seeing a stranger who had suddenly shed a mask.

Elena swallowed hard, her maternal instincts hardening into a protective fury. She looked over her shoulder at David, who was stepping closer, his face dark with fury.

David’s gaze locked onto Julian. He didn't rush or shout; his anger was cold and measured, born of a lifetime in corporate boardrooms where mistakes carried steep penalties. He crouched down slightly, invading Julian’s space.

"What did you do?" David demanded, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with controlled menace.

Julian didn't meet his gaze. Instead, he stared fixedly at a single red rose petal resting near his knee. He began wringing his hands, the skin of his knuckles turning raw and red from friction. His breath hitched in a pathetic, rhythmic cycle of tearful regret.

Elena looked on in absolute shock, her mouth slightly parted. This was the man they had welcomed into their family just hours ago—a man portrayed as gentle, devoted, and fiercely protective during their two-year courtship.

"Julian," Elena said, her voice shaking with a mixture of disbelief and disgust. "Look at me. What happened in this hallway?"

Julian kept his head bowed. The silence stretched, heavy and agonizing, until he finally spoke, his confession slipping out like poison leaking from a sealed vessel.

"I... I only wanted her to be afraid," Julian whispered.
