Chapter 9: The Desperate Alliance

Julian sat on a scratched metal bench at the downtown bus stop, the humid afternoon air sticking his wrinkled white dress shirt to his back. Across the street, the luxury boutique hotel loomed like an untouchable fortress of glass and steel, keeping him entirely out of reach. His smartphone rested dead in his palm, a useless brick of glass and metal after the carrier automatically suspended service due to non-payment on the corporate account. He felt an overwhelming wave of vertigo; the world he had built, governed by luxury, status, and absolute control, had vanished in less than twelve hours.
Footsteps crunched on the gravel beside him, and a familiar, sharp voice broke through his brooding silence.
"Well, Julian. It appears your financial fortress had a rather large structural defect in the basement."
Julian looked up to see Victor Vance standing over him, holding a sleek leather briefcase and wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit that contrasted sharply with Julian’s disheveled state. Victor wasn't smiling, but there was a cold, pragmatic amusement in his sharp eyes.
Julian scrambled to his feet, grabbing Victor by the lapel of his expensive jacket. "Don't lecture me, Victor! You're my attorney! Fix this! File an emergency injunction, claim marital coercion, do whatever it takes to freeze those accounts and get me back into the house!"
Victor gently but firmly peeled Julian’s fingers off his jacket, straightening his lapel with slow, deliberate precision. "I can't file motions out of thin air, Julian. To contest a prenuptial asset transfer executed under a valid cryptographic trust, we need leverage. And right now, you don't even have enough cash to pay my hourly retainer, let alone court filing fees."
"There has to be something," Julian hissed, lowering his voice as a pedestrian walked past them down the sidewalk. "Claire didn't write that code herself. She isn't a tech genius. Someone helped her. Find out who built that Acrania Paddle app, find out who gave her the keys to the kingdom, and we'll dismantle her case from the inside out."
Victor raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine professional interest crossing his face. "Ah. Now you're finally starting to think like a litigant instead of a dictator. Who do you suspect?"
Julian narrowed his eyes, staring across the avenue toward the hotel entrance. "David Thorne. Her cousin. He’s a senior software architect for a boutique encryption firm in Silicon Valley. He stayed with us for two weeks last summer, poking around the home automation network under the guise of upgrading our Wi-Fi."

Victor nodded slowly, pulling a small leather notebook from his breast pocket and jotting down the name with a silver fountain pen. "If David Thorne engineered the bypass, then the transfer might be legally contestable on grounds of corporate espionage and unauthorized access. It’s a long shot, Julian, but it’s the only bullet we have left in the chamber."
"Find him," Julian muttered, sitting back down on the cold metal bench as a crowded city bus hissed to a halt in front of them. "And make sure he pays for every single brick."
