Chapter 2: The Locked Out Empire

Outside the towering glass door of the foyer, the morning sun beat down mercilessly on Julian’s polished leather shoes. He had finally decided to follow them out, mostly to put an end to what he considered an embarrassing public display of domestic insubordination. He reached out with practiced ease to press his thumb against the biometric sensor of the smart door keypad, expecting the familiar green chime to welcome him back inside his own home. Instead, the screen flashed a harsh, bleeding red, accompanied by a sharp, error buzzer that grated against his nerves.

Julian’s brow furrowed in irritation. He wiped his thumb on his navy blue suit jacket and tried again, pressing harder this time. The red light flashed persistently, mocking him. Through the reinforced glass, he could see Elena standing up from the sofa, her face pale with sudden anxiety, her hand resting protectively over her rounded stomach. Julian’s face flushed with a sudden, humiliating surge of anger. He gripped the brass handle and rattled it violently, but the electromagnetic locks held firm, sealing him out of his own sanctuary.

"What the hell?" Julian shouted, his voice muffled by the thick glass. "Why won't the key turn? Claire, open this door!"

He slammed his palm against the glass panel, his carefully cultivated composure finally cracking under the weight of unexpected resistance. Inside the foyer, Claire did not even turn around. She kept walking toward the waiting taxi at the edge of the circular driveway, her pink cutout jumpsuit swaying with rhythmic precision. Leo glanced back once through the rear window of the car, watching his father press his face against the glass like an angry stranger. Julian reached frantically into the pocket of his trousers, pulling out his smartphone to override the system manually through the master administrator portal.

His fingers tapped furiously against the glass screen, opening the proprietary home automation app that he had installed just a month prior. He expected to tap a single button and restore his administrative privileges, reasserting his absolute dominance over the household. But the loading wheel spun endlessly, testing his fragile patience. When the interface finally resolved, it didn't display the familiar floor plan of security cameras and temperature controls. Instead, a stark notification banner dropped down from the top of the screen, freezing his breath in his throat.

Julian stared down at the display, his eyes widening in mounting horror as he read the title of the active application. It read 'Acrania Paddle Property Control', glowing with a sinister, unmistakable green checkmark. The status indicator beneath it confirmed a complete, irreversible property transfer action executed precisely at 8:00 AM. Every deed, every mortgage, every corporate asset tied to the estate had been legally reassigned under a dormant prenuptial clause that Julian had dismissed as harmless boilerplate text years ago.

"Open this door!" Julian screamed louder this time, his knuckles bleeding slightly against the unyielding glass as the taxi engine hummed to life in the driveway.
