Chapter 4: The Unlocked Safe

Julian bypassed Danielle entirely, his long strides carrying him directly toward the mahogany-paneled study at the end of the hall. He pushed the heavy door open, stepping inside the dimly lit room where the lingering scent of his mother’s vintage lavender perfume hung in the air. The room was pristine, save for one glaring anomaly: the concealed wall safe behind the oil painting of his grandfather stood slightly ajar.
He heard the soft rustle of silk behind him and turned to find Danielle standing in the doorway, her arms crossed defensively over her chest. The golden fabric of her dress shimmered under the recessed ceiling lights, catching the amber glow and casting dancing reflections across the wooden bookshelves.
""You shouldn't be in here, Julian,"" Danielle said, her voice entirely devoid of the panic she had shown earlier. It was smooth, measured, and dangerously calm. ""Your mother needs you at the hospital. Fretting over domestic business won't help her recover.""
Julian ignored her advice, stepping up to the safe and pulling the heavy steel door open all the way. Inside, the velvet-lined compartments were noticeably sparse. The leather-bound portfolio containing the estate’s primary land deeds, trust distributions, and the revised family will was missing.
""The portfolio is gone,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. He turned slowly to face her, his dark eyes boring into hers with intense scrutiny. ""My mother told me before the ambulance took her. She said you were arguing about the documents. She said you were looking in the safe.""
Danielle uncrossed her arms and walked slowly into the room, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. She stopped a few feet away from him, her head tilted slightly, her expression shifting from feigned innocence to a cold, calculating resolve.
""Clara’s mind is slipping, Julian. You know that as well as I do,"" Danielle said smoothly, stepping closer until she was well within his personal space. ""She forgets where she puts things, and then she panics, blaming the nearest person. Do you honestly believe I would risk everything we’ve built—everything *we* could have together—over a stack of dusty legal papers?""
""We haven't built anything, Danielle,"" Julian replied coldly, refusing to soften. ""We’ve been dating for six months. You appeared at every charity gala, every high-society fundraiser, positioning yourself perfectly within my social circle. And now, the exact night my mother’s life is threatened, her confidential estate portfolio disappears from a locked safe that only she and I knew the combination to.""
Danielle’s lips parted in a mock gasp, though her eyes remained entirely devoid of fear. ""Are you implying I knew the combination? Or are you suggesting I pushed an elderly woman down a flight of stairs for a piece of paper?""
May you like
""I’m not implying anything,"" Julian said, stepping forward until he towered over her. ""I’m asking you to put the documents back on this desk right now, before I call the police and let them sort out fingerprints.""
