Chapter 3: Whispers in the Corridor

As the wail of distant sirens began to pierce the quiet evening air, the atmosphere inside the Blackwood mansion shifted from shock to calculated surveillance. Upstairs, away from the immediate chaos of the medical personnel rushing through the front doors, Maria knelt beside little Lily in the second-floor playroom, trying to soothe the girl’s lingering distress.
""You were very brave downstairs, Lily,"" Maria murmured, handing the child a stuffed rabbit. ""But telling adults what happened is a heavy responsibility. Are you certain of what your eyes told you?""
Lily nodded vigorously, her soft brown hair swaying around her shoulders. ""I saw it, Maria. The lady in the shiny dress. She was standing right behind Grandma on the edge. Grandma turned around to say something, and the lady put her hands right on Grandma’s shoulders and pushed. Like she was shoving a heavy box.""
Maria’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. She glanced toward the heavy oak door, ensuring it was firmly shut against the corridor. Maria had worked in this house for five years; she knew every creak of the floorboards, every whispered argument behind closed doors, and every secret the Blackwood family thought they kept hidden. She knew that Clara Blackwood had recently updated her will, and she knew that Danielle Sterling was far more than a simple socialite looking for romance.
Downstairs, the paramedics wheeled Clara toward the waiting ambulance. Julian walked beside the gurney, holding his mother’s frail, wrinkled hand. Clara was conscious, her breathing assisted by an oxygen mask, but her eyes were wide with a terror that transcended physical pain. Just before they loaded her into the vehicle, Clara gripped Julian’s wrist with surprising strength.
""Julian,"" she rasped, her voice muffled by the plastic mask. ""The safe... check the safe.""
Julian frowned, leaning closer. ""Mom, save your strength. We're going to the hospital.""
""No,"" Clara insisted, a tear slipping down her weathered cheek. ""She was looking for the documents. The study safe. That's why we were arguing.""
Julian watched the ambulance doors slam shut and the red taillights fade into the rainy night. The revelation hit him with the force of a physical blow. Danielle hadn't just been visiting for a quiet evening; she had been cornered in the act of something illicit. He turned sharply on his heel and strode back into the mansion, his jaw set in cold determination.

In the grand foyer, Danielle was still standing near the staircase, waiting. She had draped a cashmere shawl over her sparkling golden dress, looking like a queen surveying a ruined kingdom. As Julian approached, she offered a sympathetic, fragile smile, but Julian's eyes held no warmth—only a chilling, investigative focus.
