Chapter 10: Sunlight in the Solarium

The solarium was Clara Blackwood’s favorite room in the mansion, a bright, glass-domed sanctuary filled with flourishing ferns, orchid plants, and comfortable wicker furniture. As Julian pushed open the double doors, warm sunlight washed over him, chasing away the lingering chill of the autumn morning.
Clara sat in a plush white-cushion armchair, a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea resting on the glass-top table beside her. She looked remarkably well; the faint bruise on her temple had completely faded, and her posture was as straight and dignified as ever.
""You wanted to see me, Mom?"" Julian asked, taking a seat opposite her.
Clara picked up her teacup, taking a slow, deliberate sip before setting it back down. ""The board meeting concluded ten minutes ago, Julian. The restructuring plan passed unanimously. The Blackwood Foundation will officially divest from our speculative real estate holdings and redirect seventy percent of our endowment into regional public education and historical restoration.""
Julian’s face lit up with genuine pride. ""That’s incredible news. It’s a massive shift, but it’s the right one. It honors everything our family originally stood for before things became... complicated.""
""It marks a new chapter,"" Clara agreed, her pale blue eyes softening as she looked at her son. ""For too many years, I measured our family’s worth by the size of our portfolio and the exclusivity of our social circle. Danielle exploited that exact vulnerability. She saw a fortress guarded by pride and mistook it for an empire ripe for plunder.""
""She’s facing up to ten years for wire fraud, forgery, and reckless endangerment,"" Julian noted quietly, leaning back in his chair. ""Her trial date is set for early spring. Her defense attorney tried to argue diminished responsibility due to social pressure, but the digital paper trail was irrefutable.""
""Let the courts handle her,"" Clara said dismissively, waving a hand gently in the air. ""What matters to me isn't what happens to Danielle Sterling in a courtroom. What matters is what happens inside these walls. We survived her, Julian. And more importantly, we learned from her.""
Julian nodded slowly, looking out through the glass dome toward the sprawling gardens where the golden leaves danced in the breeze. ""We learned that secrets are the weakest foundation a home can have. Total transparency isn't just a business policy; it’s a moral imperative.""
""Precisely,"" Clara smiled, her expression turning thoughtful. ""Which brings me to the second reason I asked you here. With the foundation’s new direction, we need someone dedicated, ethical, and deeply rooted in our values to step up as executive director.""
Julian raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile playing on his lips. ""And you have someone in mind?""
May you like
""I think,"" Clara said deliberately, ""it’s time I stepped down from day-to-day operations and handed the leadership over to someone who actually understands the human cost of neglect. Are you ready to take the helm, Julian?""
