Chapter 2: Shadows Beneath the Chandeliers

The tension in the foyer was thick enough to cut with a silver butter knife. Clara Blackwood had been carefully carried into the downstairs study by Julian, while a frantic phone call to emergency services hummed quietly in the background. In the grand hallway, however, the real battle lines were being drawn beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers.

Danielle descended the remaining steps slowly, her golden dress catching the amber light of the sconces. Her movements were calculated, restrained, designed to project an innocence she suddenly feared no one would believe. She approached Julian, who stood by the study door, his hands shoved deep into his trouser pockets, his expression a mask of guarded skepticism.

""Julian, you cannot possibly believe her,"" Danielle began, keeping her voice low and even, conscious of Maria standing nearby with little Lily still clutching her uniform. ""Clara and I were just talking. About the foundation papers. It was a dizzy spell. You know her blood pressure has been erratic.""

Julian looked down at her, his dark eyes searching her face for any sign of deceit. ""Lily doesn't lie about things like that, Danielle. She's a child, yes, but children see movements without the filters we adults apply. She said you used both hands.""

""A child’s perspective is easily distorted by fear and sudden motion,"" Danielle countered, her jaw tightening. ""When Clara stumbled, I reached out to grab her. My instinct was to save her, not shove her. Ask Maria. She was coming out of the library with the linen basket. She must have seen the motion from a different angle.""

Julian turned his gaze toward the maid. Maria stepped forward hesitantly, her dark hair pulled back into a tight bun, her posture submissive yet resolute. She looked between Julian and Danielle, her hands smoothing the front of her black apron.

""Mr. Blackwood, I... I heard the scuffle,"" Maria said softly, her English careful and measured. ""I was right by the double doors. By the time I looked up, Mrs. Blackwood was already falling. I didn't see the exact moment it started. The shadows from the stairs were very long just then.""

Danielle let out a quiet breath of relief, though she kept it carefully masked. Julian, however, found no comfort in the maid's inconclusive statement. The ambiguity only deepened the knot in his stomach. He loved Danielle, or at least he believed he was falling for her during these past six months of courtship. But his mother was his anchor, the matriarch who had held their fractured family together after his father’s passing. If someone had deliberately harmed her inside this house, blood ties and romantic attachments meant nothing.

""The paramedics will be here in five minutes,"" Julian said flatly, turning his back on Danielle to re-enter the study. ""Until then, stay out of my mother's room.""
