Chapter 2: The Echo of the Past

The sterile white lights of the hospital corridor hummed softly, casting a harsh, unyielding glare over the chaotic scene that had just unfolded. Leo stood frozen beside the metal legs of the rolling stretcher, his small hands clenched tightly into fists inside the pockets of his dark green hooded jacket. His wet, messy light brown hair stuck to his forehead, and his tear-streaked face remained locked on the face of his unconscious mother. The medical staff worked with silent, desperate efficiency, lifting her limp body onto the padded surface of the stretcher. The heavy metal rattled against the linoleum, a jarring sound that echoed in the quiet space.

Mr. Clark remained rooted to the spot a few paces away. The polished leather of his expensive shoes reflected the overhead lights, contrasting sharply with the muddy scuff marks left by the desperate eight-year-old. Clark’s sharp blue eyes, usually so calculated and unyielding, were fixed entirely on the woman’s pale features. A subtle tremor touched the corner of his clean-shaven jaw, a rare crack in his otherwise immaculate composure. The assistant in the sleek blue suit stepped half a step forward, sensing the sudden shift in his employer's demeanor, ready to intervene at the slightest command.

"Sir, we need to clear the hallway," the Asian doctor said, his voice measured as he adjusted the stethoscope around his neck. He stepped between Clark and the stretcher, blocking the direct line of sight. "This is a restricted area. Family members only beyond this point."

Leo looked up, his big, pleading hazel eyes shimmering with fresh tears. He didn't care about the rules or the doctor's stern tone. All he knew was that the tall man in the black double-breasted trench coat had looked at his mother with an expression that defied simple curiosity. It was a look of recognition, heavy with a history that Leo was too young to understand but old enough to sense.

"He's staying with me," Leo said, his voice surprisingly steady despite the violent shivering that still wracked his small frame. He reached out, his muddy fingers catching the hem of Clark’s coat once more. "Please. You said something. You know her."

Clark slowly lowered his gaze to meet the boy’s intense stare. The initial shock had receded, replaced by a dark, roiling storm of conflicting emotions that he struggled to master beneath his polished exterior. He glanced at his assistant, giving a microscopic nod that communicated a silent, urgent directive. The young man in the blue suit immediately pulled out a sleek smartphone, stepping away to make a quiet, hurried call.

"Get them into a private consultation room," Clark instructed the doctor, his voice dropping an octave, rich with an authority that brooked no argument. "Now. I am taking financial responsibility for her care, and I want her moved to the executive wing immediately."

The doctor hesitated, eyeing Clark’s sharp attire and the undeniable aura of power he projected, then nodded slowly. The medical team wheeled the stretcher down the corridor toward the elevators, Leo trotting fast to keep pace, his hand still anchored to the fabric of Clark’s coat.
