Chapter 1: The Rain-Soaked Plea

The freezing rain hammered against the glass entrance of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, distorting the city lights outside into blurred neon streaks. Leo knelt directly in the shallow puddle on the concrete, his small knees aching through the sodden fabric of his muddy trousers. His dark green hooded jacket clung heavily to his shivering shoulders, soaked completely through from the relentless storm. Water dripped steadily from his wet, messy light brown hair, mingling with the bitter tears cutting tracks through the dirt on his pale cheeks. His big, pleading hazel eyes locked onto the tall stranger standing before him, radiating a desperate, raw terror that pierced the cold night air.
"My mom’s dying! She’s all I have. Please save her!" Leo’s voice cracked with exhaustion, a ragged plea torn from the depths of an eight-year-old’s worst nightmare.
A few feet away stood Mr. Clark, impeccably dry under a large black umbrella held by his young assistant. Clark’s sharp blue eyes appraised the boy with a cold, analytical scrutiny, taking in every detail of the child’s disheveled state and the quiet desperation in his gaze. Clad in a sleek black double-breasted trench coat over a crisp white button-down shirt and a patterned black tie, Clark looked entirely out of place in the chaotic scene. He adjusted his grip on the umbrella handle, his expression shifting from detached curiosity to a calculated evaluation.
"Your mom—she’s really sick?" Clark asked, his deep voice cutting smoothly through the sound of the pouring rain, carrying an undercurrent of hidden intent.
Without waiting for a full answer, Leo scrambled up from the mud, clutching the edge of Clark’s heavy coat with muddy little fingers. He turned and bolted through the automatic sliding doors, pulling the strange, well-dressed man and his quiet assistant into the brightly lit hospital corridor. The antiseptic smell of bleach and rubbing alcohol hit them instantly.
"Mom! Wake up!" Leo cried out, sprinting down the immaculate linoleum floor toward the small huddle of people surrounding a motionless figure collapsed near the nurses' station.
A middle-aged Asian doctor wearing a pristine white coat over blue scrubs, a stethoscope dangling around his neck, knelt urgently beside the unconscious woman. She lay completely still in a blue hospital gown, her wet brown hair fanned out across the cold floor, her skin alarmingly pale. Clark stepped up behind Leo, his assistant trailing close behind in a sleek blue suit. The doctor looked up, his face lined with quiet exhaustion and stern finality.
"We’ve done everything we can. You need to go now," the doctor said firmly.
Clark’s gaze shifted from the doctor down to the unconscious woman on the floor. As hospital staff rushed forward with a wheeled stretcher, attempting desperately to revive her, Clark’s eyes widened in sudden, profound shock. The breath caught in his throat. Deep emotional tension gripped the quiet hallway.
