Chapter 10: Confrontation in the Corridor

Mr. Clark stood in the doorway, his tall frame blocking the exit completely. His black double-breasted trench coat was missing, leaving him in his crisp white shirt and patterned black tie, his sleeves still rolled up to his forearms. His sharp blue eyes blazed with a terrifying, cold fury as he took in the scene: the intruder standing near the table holding Clara’s personal belongings, and Leo crouched defensively on the sofa.
The intruder froze, realizing in an instant that he was trapped. Without a word of warning, the man lunged toward the open window, intending to smash through the double-paned glass and drop onto the lower maintenance roof outside.
"Stop him!" Clark roared, moving with an explosive speed that completely belied his calm, composed executive exterior.
Before the intruder could reach the window, a second figure appeared in the doorway like a thunderbolt. The young assistant in the sleek blue suit intercepted the fleeing man with a devastating, textbook tackle, driving him hard into the wall. The impact knocked the wind out of the intruder with a loud grunt, sending his low-brimmed cap flying across the polished floor.
The struggle lasted only a few seconds. The assistant pinned the intruder’s arms behind his back with practiced efficiency, pressing his face firmly against the drywall. Clark walked up slowly, his footsteps echoing like gunshots in the quiet room. He reached down, picked up the intruder’s dropped cap, and tossed it aside before grabbing the man roughly by the lapel of his coat, hauling him upright.
"Who sent you?" Clark asked, his voice dropping into a low, deadly whisper that chilled the air in the room. "Was it Marcus?"
The intruder, a scarred operative with a bleeding lip from the tackle, glared back defiantly. He spat a drop of blood onto the clean carpet and forced a tight, mocking smile. "You think you can hide the past, Clark? You think throwing money at a dying woman cleans your slate? People like us don't get happy endings."
Clark’s jaw tightened until the muscles ached. Without another word, he struck the man across the face with a hard, calculated blow that silenced him instantly. The assistant held the unconscious weight of the operative as Clark let go, stepping back and wiping his knuckles with a handkerchief pulled from his pocket.
"Get him down to the basement loading dock," Clark ordered his assistant, his breathing heavy and controlled. "Lock him in the secure holding room until local authorities arrive. I want a full trace on his comms device."
"Right away, sir," the assistant replied, dragging the limp intruder out into the hallway.
The room fell silent once more. Clark turned slowly to face Leo. The boy was still sitting upright on the sofa, his large hazel eyes wide with a mix of shock and undeniable awe. He had just watched the cold, untouchable businessman transform into a protector willing to use his bare hands to defend them.
"Are you okay, Leo?" Clark asked, his voice softening instantly as he walked over to the edge of the sofa, kneeling down to inspect the boy for any injuries.
Leo swallowed hard, his tough exterior slipping just enough for him to nod slowly. He looked down at the muddy clothes folded on the chair, then back up at the man standing before him. "You... you didn't run away this time."
May you like
Clark gently placed a hand on Leo’s shoulder, his gaze steady and unwavering. "No, Leo. I'm not running anymore."
