Chapter 11: The Turning Tide

The first pale rays of dawn began to pierce through the heavy gray clouds, painting the rain-streaked windows of St. Jude Memorial Hospital in pale amber and bruised violet. Inside the executive consultation room, the atmosphere had shifted from tense panic to a grim, determined quiet. Leo had finally fallen back into a restless sleep on the sofa, exhausted by the night's violent events. Clark sat in the velvet armchair beside him, staring down at the secure encrypted phone on the table.
The screen lit up with an incoming call from Marcus Vance at corporate headquarters. Clark didn't hesitate; he swiped the screen and brought the phone to his ear, his expression turning to stone.
"Clark," Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight and laced with thinly veiled panic. "We have a serious problem. The board is calling an emergency session for nine o'clock. Rumors about corporate espionage and missing contingency funds are swirling. Where the hell are you? You need to be in the boardroom."
"Save your breath, Marcus," Clark replied, his voice calm, flat, and lethally dangerous. "I know about the operative you sent to the hospital last night."
A sharp intake of breath echoed on the other end of the line. Silence stretched for several agonizing seconds before Marcus tried to recover. "I don't know what you're talking about, Clark. An operative? You're letting paranoia cloud your judgment. We have a multi-billion dollar merger on the line—"
"You sent a man to steal Clara’s medical files and intimidate an eight-year-old boy," Clark interrupted, every word dripping with ice. "He is currently locked in a secure holding cell downstairs, and local detectives are reviewing the security footage right now. Your name is already on the arrest warrant, Marcus."
The line went dead silent. The illusion of control Marcus had maintained for a decade had just shattered completely.
"Clark, listen to me," Marcus stammered, his polished veneer completely gone. "We built this company together. If I go down, I take every single hidden transaction and offshore account with me. You can't afford to burn the empire down over a ghost from your past!"
"Watch me," Clark said softly, and ended the call. He tossed the phone onto the table, the metallic clatter waking Leo with a small start.
The boy rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, his wet messy light brown hair sticking up in all directions. He looked up at Clark with a questioning gaze, his big hazel eyes still cloudy with sleep. "What happened?"
"Nothing you need to worry about, Leo," Clark said, standing up and smoothing down the front of his crisp white shirt. He walked over to the door just as a soft knock echoed through the room.
Dr. Vance stood in the doorway, his face illuminated by the bright corridor lights, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Mr. Clark," the doctor said, speaking clearly. "Clara just regained consciousness. Her vitals are stabilizing, and the breathing tube has been removed. She's asking for her son."
Leo scrambled off the sofa so fast he tripped over the heavy wool blanket, barely catching himself on the edge of the table. He looked up at Clark, his face a whirlwind of desperate hope and overwhelming fear. Clark looked down at the boy, then nodded slowly, offering a reassuring hand.

"Come on, Leo," Clark said quietly. "Let's go see your mother."
