Chapter 5

The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by the harsh clatter of a heavy key ring against the stairwell handrail. Mei zipped her canvas tote with trembling fingers, sliding the documents back into the drawer just as the metallic latch clicked shut.
"They’re checking row five now," Leo whispered, his eyes darting frantically around the confined space. The main aisle leading back to the stairs was blocked. There was only one alternative—an emergency maintenance hatch located at the far end of the archive room, half-hidden behind a towering stack of surplus shelving units.
"This way," Leo motioned, grabbing Mei’s hand and pulling her quickly through the narrow gap between the metal racks.
They squeezed past boxes of discarded municipal reports, sending a light cloud of dust into the air. Mei sneezed quietly, instantly clapping a hand over her mouth to stifle the sound. Up ahead, the emergency hatch was secured with a simple panic bar, but a rusted chain and padlock had been wound through the handles.
"Hold this," Leo handed her the canvas bag. He gripped the heavy iron chain, planting his boots firmly against the concrete baseboard. With a sharp, controlled burst of strength, he twisted the rusted links against the padlock shackle. The metal groaned under the sudden torque, a sharp screech piercing the quiet basement air.
"Over there! Someone is by the emergency exit!" a voice shouted from the main aisle, followed by the sound of rapid footsteps pounding down the rubber floor.
Leo gave one final, desperate wrench. The rusted padlock bracket snapped with a loud pop, the chain falling uselessly to the floor. He threw the heavy iron bar open, pushing the heavy steel door outward into the cool, damp alleyway behind the municipal building.
"Go, go!" Leo urged, shoving Mei through the narrow opening before slipping out himself and slamming the heavy door shut behind them. They tumbled out into the shadows just as the interior alarm began to birrp with an intermittent, warning tone.
They didn't stop to look back. Sprinting through the labyrinth of back alleys, they navigated the familiar twists and turns until the sounds of pursuit faded into the distant roar of evening traffic. They finally paused behind a row of industrial recycling bins, catching their breath in ragged gasps.
Mei leaned against the brick wall, her chest rising and falling as she clutched the canvas bag to her chest. "We... we got the files," she managed between breaths, a breathless laugh escaping her lips.

Leo looked down the dark alley, his heart finally beginning to slow to a normal rhythm. "We got the proof. But Chen knows someone was in the archive. Tomorrow morning, the rules of this game change completely."
