Chapter 2

The cramped apartment above the laundry service smelled of damp cotton and cheap jasmine tea. Leo tossed his denim jacket onto the narrow armchair and walked straight to the small window overlooking the street. The golden shopping bag sat on the kitchen counter, an obnoxious beacon of wealth in a room dominated by peeling wallpaper and makeshift bookshelves.

Mei moved quietly around the kitchenette, filling a cracked ceramic kettle with water. Her white sneakers squeaked softly against the linoleum floor. "We shouldn't have gone down that alley," she said softly, her back turned to him. "Chen always uses the old routes. He knows every shortcut we take."

"I wanted to see you smile for real, Mei. Not the smile you put on for the board meetings or the polite nod you give Chen when he hands down his decrees," Leo replied, turning around to face her. His voice was restrained, edged with a quiet frustration that had been brewing for months. "We are living like fugitives in our own city, and we didn't even commit a crime."

"The crime was being born into families with more debt than honor," Mei countered, turning around with the kettle in hand. Her face was pale, the fluorescent light casting harsh shadows under her dark eyes. "Your father gambled the studio away, and my family signed away our distribution rights to cover his losses. Chen is just the collector. A very expensive, very polished collector."

Leo walked over and took the kettle from her hands, setting it on the small hot plate. He caught her wrists, his thumbs brushing lightly against her pulse point. It beat too fast, a frantic rhythm that mirrored his own anxiety. "We can walk away. Pack a single bag, leave the phone cards behind, and take the night train south. Nobody would find us in the coastal provinces."

Mei shook her head slowly, a lock of long dark hair falling across her cheek. "And my mother? And the workers at the warehouse who depend on the studio's payroll? You know we can't just vanish, Leo. That golden bag on the counter contains the final buyout contract. If we sign it, we give up the land. If we refuse, Chen initiates foreclosure by Monday morning."

The reality of their situation pressed down on them like the ceiling before a storm. They were trapped between a sense of duty to others and the desperate desire for their own survival. Leo released her wrists and stepped back, running a hand through his short dark hair. The silence in the room became heavy, filled only by the low hiss of the heating pipes.

They spent the next hour reviewing the documents inside the golden bag. Page after page of legal jargon, forfeiture clauses, and liability waivers. It was a masterpiece of corporate engineering, designed to strip them of everything while leaving their dignity just bruised enough that they wouldn't fight back. But as Leo turned to the final appendix, he noticed something oddβ€”a discrepancy in the property boundary definitions that didn't match the city archives. A faint glimmer of hope, fragile as glass, began to form in his mind.
