Chapter 12

The following morning, the digital front pages of every major regional financial journal and news portal published the leaked documents under a scathing headline: Corporate Fraud Exposed: Inside the Systematic Seizure of District Assets.
By noon, the fallout was instantaneous. Chen’s corporate firm issued a frantic, hastily written press release denying all allegations, but the municipal oversight board had already frozen all active foreclosure proceedings tied to the district properties, citing an immediate, high-priority federal investigation.
Leo and Mei stood across the street from the corporate tower, watching the steady stream of reporters and camera crews swarming the main entrance. Men in sharp suits rushed past the glass doors with briefcases held defensively over their faces, dodging aggressive questioning from journalists.
Parked near the corner of the block was Chen’s dark sedan. The back door opened slowly, and Director Chen stepped out onto the pavement. He looked older today, his styled grey-streaked hair slightly disheveled, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned. He wasn't holding a golden shopping bag this time. His hands were empty, clenched into tight fists at his sides as he surveyed the media storm surrounding his building.
He turned his head slowly, locking eyes with Leo and Mei standing across the street by the brick wall of a small cafe.
Mei didn't flinch. She met his intense, disapproving gaze with a calm, unyielding expression, her green jumpsuit catching the bright midday sun. Leo stood beside her, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his dark pants, his posture relaxed and entirely devoid of fear.
Chen started walking across the street toward them, cutting through the heavy traffic with the deliberate, measured stride of a man accustomed to command. The reporters noticed the movement and began pivoting their cameras in his direction, shouting rapid-fire questions.
"Director Chen! Is it true your firm falsified municipal land records?"
"Do you have a comment on the federal freeze order?"
Chen ignored them completely. He walked right up to Leo and Mei, stopping just two feet away. His face was a mask of cold fury, but beneath the anger, there was the unmistakable realization of defeat.
"You think you’ve won," Chen said, his voice low and bitter, meant only for their ears. "You’ve destroyed the firm’s credit rating for the next decade. The board will tear you apart in civil court for breach of confidentiality."
"There is no confidentiality breach when exposing criminal fraud, Director," Mei replied evenly, her voice steady and clear. "The documents were turned over to the oversight board by the community union. You can't sue people for returning stolen property."
Chen stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, searching her face for any sign of weakness or hesitation. Finding none, he let out a short, cold breath, adjusting his glasses with a stiff motion of his hand.

"Enjoy your little victory while it lasts," Chen said quietly, turning his back on them and walking back toward the entrance of his crumbling empire.
