Chapter 14

The grand reopening of the community cooperative was held on a crisp autumn morning under a bright, cloudless sky. The brick courtyard outside the restored workshop was decorated with colorful banners, and long wooden tables were laden with food, fresh tea, and community project displays.

Uncle Zhang stood at the podium set up near the entrance, leaning on his carved wooden cane as he addressed the gathered crowd of workers, families, and local supporters. His voice rang out clear and strong across the courtyard, speaking of resilience, unity, and the enduring power of ordinary people standing together against impossible odds.

Leo and Mei stood near the back of the crowd, watching with quiet pride. Mei wore her green jumpsuit, though today it felt less like a uniform of defiance and more like a badge of survival. Leo stood beside her, his hands in his pockets, wearing his familiar denim shirt over a clean white t-shirt.

As Zhang finished his speech, the courtyard erupted into loud, sustained applause. People hugged, laughed, and raised their cups in a collective toast to their newly recovered independence.

Mei turned to Leo, her eyes shining with quiet emotion. "We actually did it."

"We did," Leo agreed, slipping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. "Together."

Kwan walked over holding two paper cups of tea, grinning broadly as he handed one to each of them. "Well, the financial papers are officially off our backs, and the new transport contracts are signed. What’s the first official order of business for the new cooperative?"

Leo looked down at Mei, a playful spark in his eye. "I think the first order of business is a proper run down the alley—without Director Chen watching from the doorway."

Mei laughed, a bright, musical sound that carried across the courtyard. Without a second thought, she turned and jumped lightly onto Leo’s back, wrapping her arms around his neck as she had done weeks ago in the narrow brick passage.

Leo caught her effortlessly, spinning around with a joyful grin and breaking into a light, playful sprint down the stone-paved path toward the open street. Passersby smiled as they watched them pass, two people completely at peace in a world they had fought hard to reclaim.
