Chapter 7

Back at the suburban house, the afternoon sun streamed through the bay windows of the living room, illuminating a room that finally felt like a home rather than a stage. Chloe and Lily were sitting cross-legged on the plush carpet in the center of the room, surrounded by a colorful explosion of puzzle pieces, board game boxes, and sketchpads.

“Okay, Lily bug, where does this purple corner piece go?” Chloe asked, holding up a small cardboard puzzle piece with a quizzical expression.

Lily giggled, pointing a small finger toward the edge of the puzzle landscape. “Right there, Aunt Chloe! Next to the pink castle tower!”

Chloe snapped the piece into place with a triumphant nod. “Nailed it! You’re getting entirely too good at this. I think I need to find a harder puzzle with at least five hundred pieces.”

The front door unlocked and swung open. David walked into the hallway, tossing his keys onto the wooden console table. The sound of their laughter greeted him, wrapping around his tired spirit like a warm blanket. He walked into the living room, loosening his dark blue button-up shirt at the collar, and dropped down onto the carpet beside his daughter.

Lily immediately scrambled across the rug and threw her arms around her father’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder. “Daddy! You’re home early!”

David wrapped his arms tightly around the little girl, pressing a gentle kiss into her blonde ponytail. “Of course I am, sweetheart. I told you, my schedule belongs to you now. How was your afternoon with Aunt Chloe? Did you conquer the puzzle kingdom?”

“We finished the whole castle!” Lily announced proudly, pulling back to show him the completed puzzle spread out on the rug. Then, her expression softened slightly, her eyes glancing toward the coffee table where the small blue inhaler rested securely in its designated leather pouch. “Daddy… do I have to go to dance class on Tuesday?”

David looked down at her tenderly, remembering how Tabitha had used dance classes and social obligations as excuses to isolate the child and control her schedule. He cupped Lily’s small face in his hands.

“You only have to do whatever makes you happy, Lily. If you want to go to dance class because you love it, we will go together every single week. But if you don’t want to go, or if you just want to stay home and read stories or build puzzles with Chloe and me, that is entirely your choice. Nobody is ever going to force you to do anything you aren’t comfortable with again.”

Lily smiled, a look of profound relief washing over her features. “I want to stay home with you and Aunt Chloe for a while, Daddy. Just the three of us.”

Chloe smiled softly from across the room, watching the two of them with quiet satisfaction. The house was healing. The dark cloud that had hovered over them for years had finally been swept away by truth, courage, and unconditional love.
