Chapter 4

The heavy thud of a designer suitcase hitting the hardwood floor of the master bedroom echoed through the quiet house like a gunshot. Tabitha moved frantically back and forth between the walk-in closet and the king-sized bed, sweeping clothes off hangers and tossing them indiscriminately into her leather luggage. Her hands trembled, not from sorrow, but from a blinding, narcissistic rage. How could this happen to her? How could a life of luxury, social standing, and effortless control unravel in the span of a single afternoon just because of a wheezing child and a nosy sister-in-law?

Downstairs in the kitchen, David poured himself a glass of water, his hands shaking slightly as he set the pitcher back on the counter. The adrenaline that had fueled his frantic dash across the living room earlier had drained away, leaving behind a hollow, exhausted numbness. He looked down at the small blue inhaler resting beside the kitchen sink—the very object that had served as a sadistic plaything for the woman he had married two years ago. He felt sick to his stomach. He had prided himself on being a provider, a protector, and a watchful father, yet a monster had been operating right under his nose while he worked late to secure their financial future.

Chloe walked into the kitchen quietly, leaning against the doorframe. She watched her brother for a moment before speaking. “Is she actually packing?”

“Yes,” David said, his voice raspy. “She knows there’s no way out. The lawyers confirmed that the digital evidence is airtight. Between the nanny-cam footage I didn’t even know was recording in the hallway and the video you took during the dinner party, her game is over.”

“Good,” Chloe said firmly. “Because if she wasn’t leaving voluntarily, I was prepared to drag her out by her designer hair myself. David, we need to talk about what happens next. Lily’s psychological trauma isn’t going to vanish just because Tabitha is out of the house. The child was systematically convinced that her own father would abandon her if she spoke up about her medical needs.”

David closed his eyes, pressing the heels of his hands against his face as a fresh wave of guilt crashed over him. “I know, Chloe. I failed her. I was so caught up in trying to rebuild a family for Lily after Sarah passed that I walked right into a trap. I let a wolf into the nursery.”

“You didn’t know,” Chloe said gently, walking over to place a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Tabitha is a master manipulator. She played the perfect, elegant stepmother role when anyone was watching. But knowing is half the battle. Now we fix it. We get Lily into counseling, we surround her with family, and we make sure she never has to look over her shoulder in her own home again.”

Heavy footsteps sounded on the stairs. Tabitha appeared in the kitchen doorway, dragging two massive suitcases behind her. Her light blue button-up shirt was slightly wrinkled, and her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight, severe ponytail. She looked at David and Chloe with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

“You’re making a monumental mistake, David,” Tabitha hissed, pausing by the door. “You’ll regret the day you chose a coughing brat over a real partner. Enjoy playing single father again. We’ll see who’s laughing when the divorce lawyers tear your precious business apart.”
