Chapter 11

The formal deposition took place in a neutral conference room at the downtown law firm rather than inside a intimidating courtroom, sparing Lily from the harsh environment of a public trial. With Dr. Harrison present as a pediatric expert witness, and Arthur Vance managing the legal proceedings, the process was designed to be as gentle and protective of the child as humanly possible.

Lily sat beside her father and aunt at the polished mahogany table, wearing her favorite light patterned dress and white sneakers, clutching a small stuffed rabbit Chloe had given her for comfort. When the court-appointed guardian ad litem gently asked her questions about her daily life at home, Lily answered with quiet, unshakeable honesty. She didn't exaggerate, nor did she falter; she simply recounted the factual reality of what happened when her father traveled for work.

Across the table, Tabitha’s high-priced defense attorney attempted to interrupt, trying to frame the child’s testimony as coached or unreliable due to her young age.

Arthur Vance didn't even raise his voice. He simply slid the master flash drive containing the enhanced hallway security logs and Chloe’s dinner party video across the table, cueing up the exact timestamp where Tabitha tossed the inhaler into the air while Lily gasped for breath.

“Counselor,” Arthur said calmly, his tone dripping with professional authority. “You are welcome to dispute the child’s memory if you wish, though child psychologists have already verified her consistency. However, you cannot argue with four-K high-definition video evidence capturing audio of your client deliberately withholding life-saving medical devices from a chronic asthma patient. We can submit this to the state prosecutor’s office for criminal endangerment charges right now, or we can finalize the uncontested divorce settlement before noon. The choice is yours.”

Tabitha, sitting a few seats away in a sharp grey blazer with her legal team whispering urgently in her ear, stared down at the polished wooden surface of the table. Her carefully maintained mask of aristocratic elegance had completely disintegrated. She knew she had lost. The digital age had left no room for her deceptions, no safe corners where cruelty could hide behind polite manners.

Within twenty minutes, the papers were signed. Tabitha’s financial claims were formally dismissed under the terms of the prenuptial agreement, and the restraining order was permanently codified into the legal decree. As Tabitha gathered her expensive leather portfolio and stormed out of the conference room without a single backward glance, the heavy atmosphere in the room lifted like morning mist burned away by the sun.

David let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the final physical knot of stress untie itself in his chest. He reached over, wrapping his arm around Lily’s shoulders and pulling her close.

“It’s over, sweetheart,” David whispered softly. “She’s gone for good.”

Lily looked up at him, offering a small, bright smile that reached all the way to her eyes. “Can we go get ice cream now, Daddy?”
