BREATHLESS BETRAYAL / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10

Even as the legal machinery ground predictably toward its inevitable conclusion, the emotional aftermath of betrayal left quiet ripples that required careful navigation. One rainy Saturday afternoon, while Chloe was out running errands and picking up supplies for a weekend baking project, David and Lily were sorting through old storage boxes in the upstairs hallway closet—boxes that had remained untouched since Tabitha moved in two years prior.

Lily pulled out a heavy photo album bound in faux leather, its cover smudged with dust. She flipped open the heavy pages, her fingers tracing the glossy prints of family vacations, holiday dinners, and weekend barbecues. Most of the pictures featured Tabitha smiling brightly, striking elegant poses in various scenic locations while Lily stood dutifully nearby, wearing forced smiles that David now recognized as masks of pure terror.

Lily’s finger paused on a photograph taken during a summer trip to the lake house. In the background, David was grilling burgers on the patio, completely unaware of the scene playing out in the foreground. Tabitha was leaning down, whispering something into Lily’s ear while tightly gripping the child’s bare arm hard enough to leave faint red marks that David had dismissed at the time as a playground scrape.

Lily stared at the photograph, her breathing hitching slightly. She reached out instinctively, her small hand brushing against the pocket of her light patterned dress where her blue inhaler safely rested.

David noticed the sudden stillness in his daughter’s posture. He immediately knelt beside her on the carpet, gently placing his hand over hers. “Lily? Are you okay, sweetheart?”

Lily looked up at him, her blue eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “She told me at the lake that if I told you she pinched me, you would send me away to live with strangers because you loved her more than me. I was so scared, Daddy. Every time you walked away, I thought you weren't coming back.”

David’s heart shattered all over again. He pulled Lily into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest as a hot tear slipped down his own cheek. He rocked her gently back and forth on the hallway floor, burying his face in her blonde hair.

“I am so, so sorry, Lily,” David whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I am so sorry I wasn’t paying close enough attention. I promise you with every fiber of my being—nobody will ever make you feel that way again. You are my daughter, my whole world, and nothing in this universe could ever make me love you less or send you away.”

Lily buried her face in her father’s dark blue shirt, her small frame relaxing as the terror of the memory finally dissolved under the warmth of his unconditional reassurance. They sat there together on the carpet for a long time, letting the rain tap softly against the windowpanes—not as a symbol of storm and destruction, but as a cleansing wash of the past.
