Chapter 8: The Confrontation

The main corridor outside the pediatric unit was filled with the rhythmic click of expensive wingtip shoes.

Julian Vance strode through the security checkpoint, flanked by two attorneys in tailored wool coats and an elderly physician carrying a specialized transport file. Behind them stood two uniformed county deputies, their faces somber, bound by the authority of a judicial order.

"Dr. Stewart," Julian announced, stopping outside the double doors. "We have the certified transfer authorization from Judge Sterling. We are here to prepare Caleb Vance for immediate ambulance transport to St. Jude’s."

The doors slid open.

Gabriel stepped out into the corridor. He had changed into a clean, unadorned black shirt, his dark hair combed back, his posture straight, calm, and unshakable. In his hands, he held no weapons, only a leather folio.

"His name is Caleb Cross," Gabriel said calmly. "And he isn't going anywhere."

"Gabriel, do not make this an embarrassing scene for the authorities," Julian said, offering a tight, patronizing smile. "The court order is clear. You have twenty minutes to surrender his belongings."

"Deputy Miller," Gabriel said, turning his gaze to the senior officer standing behind the lawyers. "Before you execute that paper, you need to review the emergency injunction issued twenty minutes ago by the State Supreme Court."

Gabriel opened the folio, handing a stamped legal document to the officer.

Julian’s smile faltered. "What nonsense is this?"

"It's a federal warrant, Julian," a new voice echoed down the hall.

District Attorney Sarah Lin walked through the entrance, accompanied by three plainclothes state investigators and Evelyn Cross. Evelyn kept her head up, her face pale but resolute, clutching a certified copy of her sworn testimony.

"Julian Vance," DA Lin stated, flashing her badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, solicitation of battery against an infant, and falsification of judicial documents. Step against the wall."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically between Evelyn, the state investigators, and Gabriel. The aristocratic composure he had worn his entire life peeled away, revealing the raw, ugly desperation beneath.

"This is an outrage! My family founded this hospital! You have no standing!" Julian snarled, backing away toward his lawyers, who were already slowly raising their briefcases to step aside.

"We have the server logs, Julian," Gabriel said, his voice quiet, devoid of anger, filled only with the cold finality of truth. "We have the wire transfers. We have the nurse in custody at the state line. It's over."

The deputies moved in, turning Julian around and securing the steel cuffs behind his back. As the heir to Vance Industries was led down the hall under the cold gaze of the hospital staff, the sound of his angry protests faded into the morning air.
