Chapter 7: The Brink of Light

By six in the morning, the rain had ceased, leaving the city enveloped in a dense, silvery fog.

In the pediatric ICU, the monitor's alarm sounded a sudden, sharp trill that brought Emma instantly to her feet. Caleb’s tiny chest was hitching, fighting against the rhythm of the mechanical bellows.

"He's waking up," Emma said to the respiratory therapist. "Turn down the propofol infusion. Prepare for immediate extubation."

Gabriel returned through the ICU doors just as Emma carefully lifted the tape from his son’s lips. He stood motionless at the bedside, his heart hammering violently in his throat, holding his breath as Emma swiftly and smoothly drew the endotracheal tube from the infant’s airway.

For five agonizing seconds, there was absolute silence.

The room seemed to collapse into a vacuum of suspended time. Caleb’s face twisted into an angry, red grimace. His tiny fists clutched at the empty air.

Then, a sharp, indignant, furious wail shattered the stillness of the room.

It was not the weak, muffled cry of a failing infant; it was a loud, full-throated, glorious roar of life that bounced off the stainless-steel cabinets and vibrated through the monitors.

Emma let out a ragged, weeping laugh, wiping her forehead with the back of her wrist. "Oxygen saturation is ninety-eight on room air. Neurological reflexes are intact. His pupils are reactive."

Gabriel sank forward, resting his forehead against the safety rail of the crib. Hot tears spilled freely from his eyes, soaking into the cotton blanket. He reached out, and Caleb’s tiny, perfect fingers immediately locked around his thumb, gripping with surprising, desperate strength.

"He's here, Gabe," Emma whispered, her hand resting warmly on Gabriel’s shaking shoulder. "He came back to you."

"Thank you," Gabriel wept, kissing the back of his son’s tiny hand. "Thank you, Emma."

"Don't thank me yet," she said, looking toward the hallway where the elevator chime sounded. "It’s seven forty-five. Julian’s legal team just arrived in the lobby."
