Chapter 13: The First Steps

By the time the spring tides washed the winter debris from the dunes, Caleb was eleven months old.

He was a whirlwind of curiosity, crawling across the wide-plank floors with relentless energy, pulling himself up on chair legs, and babbling an enthusiastic language composed entirely of vowels and triumphant laughs.

One sunny Saturday in May, the porch doors were thrown wide to let in the warm breeze off the bay.

Gabriel was on his knees on the rug, a set of hand-carved wooden building blocks scattered around him. Caleb stood against the edge of the sofa, his tiny, dimpled hands clutching the fabric, his round face flushed with determination.

"Come on, buddy," Gabriel coaxed, holding out his hands, palms up, four feet away. "You've got this. Walk to Dad."

Emma sat on the porch steps outside, watching through the screen with a cup of mint tea, a wide smile crinkling the corners of her eyes.

Caleb looked at the distance between the sofa and his father's hands. He let out a sharp, decisive breath, released his grip on the cushions, and stood balanced on his chubby, bare feet.

He swayed like a ship in a gentle swell. Then, with an unsteady, heroic focus, he took a step forward.

Then another.

And a third.

On the fourth step, his balance faltered, and he tumbled directly forward into Gabriel’s waiting, outstretched arms. Gabriel caught him, lifting him high into the air as the boy erupted into shrieks of pure, unadulterated laughter.

"Look at you!" Gabriel laughed, pulling his son against his neck, burying his face in the soft, sweet-smelling curls. "Four steps! You're unstoppable, Caleb."

Emma stepped through the screen door, her eyes glistening with quiet tears. She reached out, resting her hand against Caleb’s cheek.

"I remember when we fought for every single breath in that room," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

Gabriel looked up at her, his own eyes shining with immense gratitude. He took her hand in his, their fingers interlacing naturally, without hesitation or fear.

"We fought for his breath, Emma," Gabriel said softly. "And he gave us ours back."
