Chapter 4: The Uninvited Guest

At three in the morning, the heavy glass doors of the intensive care waiting area slid open with an audible click.
Gabriel was standing by the window, watching the rain streak the outer panes, when the reflection in the glass caught a familiar, imposing figure entering the corridor.
It was Julian Vance—Sophia’s older brother and the newly appointed CEO of Vance Industries. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal overcoat, his silver-streaked hair swept back, his aristocratic face arranged into an expression of calculated, solemn condolence. Behind him walked two men with earpieces and broad shoulders, their coats bulging slightly near the armpits.
Gabriel turned around, stepping directly into the center of the hall, cutting off their approach to the ICU doors.
"You're out of your territory, Julian," Gabriel said, his hands remaining loosely at his sides.
Julian stopped five paces back, raising a hand to halt his security detail. "I received word that my nephew was rushed to the trauma center, Gabriel. Family belongs at the bedside during a medical crisis."
"You lost the right to use the word 'family' the night you threw Sophia's belongings onto the curb in the winter rain," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register that made the security guards stiffen. "What are you doing here?"
Julian produced an embossed white envelope from his breast pocket, holding it out with two fingers. "A formal petition for emergency guardianship, signed by Chief Justice Sterling an hour ago. Given your... volatile associations, and the clear security failure that occurred in your penthouse tonight, the state has determined that Caleb requires a protective ward."
"A protective ward?" Gabriel let out a low, dry chuckle that held no humor. "You poisoned him, Julian. You paid a nurse a quarter of a million dollars to slip a neurotoxin into his nebulizer so you could claim I neglected him."
Julian’s eyes didn't widen in surprise; they remained flat, cold, and entirely devoid of human empathy.
"An absurd allegation born of grief and panic," Julian replied smoothly. "You have no evidence, Gabriel. What you have is an infant on life support under your roof. The magistrate will sign the transfer order at eight o'clock this morning. We are moving him to St. Jude’s Private Pavilion under our medical oversight."
Gabriel took a single step forward. The two security guards shifted their weight, but Gabriel didn't flinch. He leaned in, his dark eyes boring into Julian’s with a feral, unshakable resolve.

"You touch that door, Julian, and neither your money nor your judges will save you from the reckoning I will bring down upon your life. Walk away while you still can."
Julian held his gaze for five agonizing seconds before giving a tight, dismissive smirk. "Eight o'clock, Gabriel. Enjoy the remaining hours."
