Chapter 8

The shadow fell across the kitchen doorway before the man even stepped into the bright, sunlit space. He was tall, dressed in a sharp, charcoal-gray suit that contrasted sharply with the casual domesticity of the room. His expression was completely blank, devoid of any human warmth, and his eyes scanned the space with clinical precision, immediately locking onto Arthur huddled by the island, then shifting to Chloe and the terrified boy standing protectively behind her.
"Arthur," the man said smoothly, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that seemed to suck all the air out of the room. "You really thought you could hide behind white picket fences and modern appliances forever? The digital footprint you left this morning was sloppy, old friend. Very sloppy."
Arthur didn't look up. He simply pressed himself harder against the base of the marble counter, his lips moving in silent, panicked prayers.
Chloe stepped forward, planting her sneakers firmly on the tile floor, raising the heavy cast-iron skillet just high enough to signal she wasn't going down without a fight. "Get out of our house," she demanded, her voice ringing out steady and clear, belying the sheer terror gripping her internal organs. "You have no right to be here."
The man in the suit glanced at the skillet, a faint, cold smirk touching the corners of his mouth, though his eyes remained dead and calculating. He didn't draw a weapon, which somehow made him infinitely more terrifying; his confidence was absolute. "Put the pan down, little girl. You're playing a game you don't understand, with pieces that stopped mattering a long time ago." He took a slow step into the kitchen, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the tile. "We just want the ledger. Hand it over, and maybe we let your pathetic excuse of a father walk out of here breathing."
Toby whimpered behind Chloe, his small fingers bunching into the dark jeans she wore. Chloe felt a surge of protective fury that pushed aside her fear. She looked down at the leather-bound notebook tucked under her arm—the very weapon that held their leverage, the blueprint of this man’s illegal empire.
"We're not giving you anything," Chloe said, her tone dripping with quiet venom. "We read every single page. We know what Arthur did, but we also know what you did. Copies of this book were uploaded to a secure cloud server the moment your car pulled into the driveway. If anything happens to us, the authorities get the whole package."

The smirk vanished instantly from the man's face, replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl. The clinical detachment cracked, revealing the ruthless predator underneath. He took another aggressive step forward, closing the distance between them with unsettling speed. "You're bluffing," he hissed, his voice dropping an octave.
"Try me," Chloe whispered, her grip tightening on the skillet until her knuckles ached. The standoff hung on a razor’s edge, a silent war of wills in the bright morning kitchen.
