BREAKING THE GLASS HOUSE / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7

The crunch of tires rolling slowly up the long, secluded driveway froze everyone in the kitchen. The cheerful morning birds outside suddenly sounded agonizingly loud against the oppressive quiet that swallowed the room whole. Arthur’s face drained of what little color remained, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic as he backed away from the window, instinctively trying to make himself invisible.

"They're here," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling so violently the words barely registered. "I told you. I told you they wouldn't wait."

Chloe felt a cold wave of adrenaline surge through her veins, sharpening her senses to a razor-thin edge. She grabbed Toby’s hand, pulling the young boy firmly against her side. The dark red t-shirt he wore felt damp with his cold sweat. "Get away from the windows," she ordered Arthur in a fierce, low hiss, her tone leaving no room for argument. Surprisingly, the man who had terrorized them for years obeyed without a single word of protest, slumping down near the kitchen island and pulling his knees to his chest like a broken child.

Car doors slammed shut outside—two distinct metallic echoes that signaled a coordinated arrival. Heavy, deliberate footsteps crunched across the gravel pathway leading directly toward the front porch. Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her outward posture remained rigid and protective. She scanned the modern kitchen for a weapon, her eyes locking onto a heavy cast-iron skillet resting on the stove. It wasn't much, but it was tangible.

"Chloe," Toby whimpered, burying his face in the fabric of her beige hoodie, his small frame shaking with terror. "I'm scared."

"I know, buddy. I'm right here. Look at me, Toby. Keep your eyes on me," Chloe whispered fiercely, crouching down to be at eye level with her little brother. She forced a steady, reassuring warmth into her gaze, masking the absolute dread clawing at her throat. "Nothing is going to happen to you. Do you hear me? I won't let them touch you."

The heavy brass knocker on the front door struck three times. Thud. Thud. Thud.

May you like

The sound reverberated through the open-concept house, shattering the illusion of safety that the bright, sunlit rooms had provided. Nobody spoke. Arthur remained huddled by the island, staring at the floor in mute terror, completely paralyzed by the very forces he had unleashed years ago. He was no longer a threat; he was just another liability.

When no one answered, the front door handle rattled violently. The latch clicked, and the heavy oak door swung open with a slow, ominous creak. Uninvited guests had crossed the threshold of the glass house. Heavy, measured footsteps began traversing the hardwood floor of the entryway, moving purposefully down the hall toward the bright modern kitchen. Chloe stood up slowly, positioning herself squarely in front of Toby, gripping the heavy cast-iron skillet in one hand while the leather ledger rested safely tucked under her arm. The reckoning had finally arrived.
