Chapter 14: The Long Road Home

The flight from the local regional airport to Portland was smooth, cutting through a vast ocean of fluffy white clouds that stretched endlessly toward the horizon. Toby pressed his face against the airplane window, mesmerized by the patchwork quilt of fields and rivers scrolling far below. For the first time in his life, he wasn't looking over his shoulder for shadows; he was simply a young boy watching the world unfold beneath him with wonder.
Chloe sat next to him, her fingers laced tightly together in her lap. The rhythmic hum of the jet engines provided a soothing backdrop to her swirling thoughts. She looked out at the bright sky, feeling an unfamiliar lightness settle into her chest. The constant hum of anxiety that had served as her internal soundtrack for years was finally gone, replaced by a quiet, steady peace.
They had visited the precinct one last time before boarding, signing the final paperwork releasing them into Aunt Sarah’s custody. Arthur was already being transferred to a federal holding facility upstate, awaiting trial. He hadn't asked to see them again, recognizing that his presence in their lives was a chapter best left closed. Chloe felt no anger toward him anymore—only a profound, distant pity. He had chosen a path of paranoia and deception, and he would reap the lonely harvest of his choices. But she and Toby were free.
The plane’s landing gear lowered with a mechanical thud as the aircraft began its descent toward Portland International Airport. Through the window, the misty, evergreen-covered landscape of the Pacific Northwest came into view, majestic and untamed.
When the plane touched down and taxied to the gate, Chloe grabbed their carry-on bags and took Toby’s hand. They walked down the jet bridge and entered the bustling terminal, surrounded by a sea of travelers rushing to their destinations. Amidst the crowd stood a woman with kind eyes, silver-streaked blonde hair, and an anxious, hopeful expression holding a hand-lettered sign that read: CHLOE & TOBY.
Aunt Sarah spotted them immediately. Her face broke into a wide, luminous smile, and she dropped her sign, rushing forward with open arms. Before Chloe could even process the moment, Sarah enveloped them both in a fierce, bone-crushing hug that smelled faintly of pine needles and warm vanilla.

"Oh, my sweet babies," Sarah choked out, tears sparkling in her eyes as she squeezed them tight. "You're finally here. You're safe now. I've got you."
Toby buried his face in her jacket, melting instantly into the embrace, while Chloe felt the last remaining walls around her heart completely dissolve. She wrapped her arms around her aunt, closing her eyes as a single tear of pure relief slipped down her cheek.
